I thought at one time that if you needed the screen replaced there was a cost of ~$270.00 if it was cracked because you dropped it, etc.
When the iPhone cost was $599.00, $270 was not a bad price. Now that the 8GB iPhone is $399.00, you might want to consider getting a new iPhone if the charge is still ~$270.00. It is now a question, which way to go.
If you can afford it, get a new iPhone, send the broken one back to a 3rd party for possible repair and it may turn out to be the bargain of the century.
I had that same problem with my screen and sent it in to Apple service. They couldn't replace the screen but gave me a new phone and I was not charged for the service.

I dropped my phone and cracked the screen. I tried the Genius bar and they basically told me I was out of luck and to repair it would cost $250 plus shipping. So I wouldn't hold out much hope for Apple mercy on this one. It still works but I fear that the cracks could get worse. As I paid the original price for the 8GB I'm looking for a cheaper OEM screen replacement (not DIY) but failing that I plan to use it and wait for the next gen and buy a new one. Any better suggestions? BTW they are not as hardy as you may believe--mine just landed the wrong way on some tile.

My Iphone screen is broken, the phone is working fine. I went to an Apple store and they are asking $250 for replacement, they dont have screen replacement capability. This is very frustrating, for a $399 phone they are asking $250 just to replace the screen. Its Apple's problem if they dont have infrastructure to repair Iphone, why are they penalizing customers. Their argument is that they are giving me a new phone, but I dont need a new phone, I just want them to replace my screen because everything else is working fine.
Not a good way to keep your customers happy.

It is just a fact of life that modern electronics designs do not lend themselves to inexpensive repairs. Glues require no extra fastener parts that add weight, bulk, & cost; & usually result in stronger products. (Aircraft are now more glued together than ever before for the same reason.) Ever larger & more integrated sub-assemblies allow much more functionality in less space, with fewer failure points & lower manufacturing costs. There are similar advantages in designing connections that are not robust enough to withstand repeated handling, flexing, or repair, especially with printed circuits & ribbon connectors.
Apple could design iPhones to be much less expensive & easier to repair, but they would be larger, heavier, most likely less reliable, & cost more upfront, which would penalize customers more on the average. My screen is cracked, too. A trip to the genius at the Annapolis Mall store in MD netted me few options. I was told it wasn't eligable for repair and my only option was to buy a new one with a 10 percent discount. This was after a trip to the manager for confirmation. A later call to AppleCare offered the $249 repair option and a loaner phone. So, first of all it appears that everyone is on a different page on this which regardless of the problem is poor customer support. Second, a cracked screen because of normal use (happened when i pushed the home button - not hard - and the cracks radiate from there) should be a replacement issue after a month's use. This is my second iphone, the first had an antenna problem and only worked if i stood under a AT&T cell tower - nice.
I hope someone will make this right, but i have little confidence anymore in Apple's ability to do the right thing.

There are 3rd party websites that sell the replacement parts for DIY repairs. There are also 3rd party repair stations that can fix it for you for a fraction of the cost.

This *****...I'm in a current situation. The screen landed one in a million and it busted. Now what? Sounds to me the best deal is just eat the cost of a new phone and send off your old phone to a 3rd party and ebay it off. Warranties do not cover misuse and abuse. Dropping your phone counts at that.
its not like a screen defect made it shatter. The screen is made of glass. If you drop it, it might break.
Apple has made a great deal of errors with this product, but your broken phone is not one of them.
Also, if you have it repaired by an authorized Apple repair station, it keeps your warranty, so if something happens later down the road you are covered. There are a lot of things that can go wrong other than a busted screen...

Well I would not call it slipping from my hand abuse or misuse but it still works so I'm using it cracked for now. I have a pretty visible job so I assume other potential customers will not **** after one after seeing mine.
BTW--the reason I reached for it is the annoying buzz it makes in my purse after retreiving my email--I thought I had a call.
Anyway, there will be more of us in this situation as the sales increase so we'll see how Apple handles it. Had there been any kind of iPhone insurance available I would have bought it (I always buy Apple Care). I bought my iPhone on June 30, but my husband bought his in September. When we were at the Apple store buying his I'm pretty sure I saw that they are offering AppleCare for the iPhones now. I remember thinking how unfair it was that they didn't offer it when I bought mine. I might be remembering wrong, but I'm pretty sure.
