Here too. Same symptoms. At least Apple has now acknowledged the problem, after letting me spend half of last weekend trying things their helpdesk suggested whilst pretending they'd never heard of the problem before.

I'll wait until the end of the month. If a fix hasn't appeared by then, the box is going back to the shop for a full refund under UK consumer law as not of 'merchantable quality'.

I have tried verything posted on the internet on my computer, repairing permissions, not upgrading, not transferring preferences and files... but nothing seems to work.

I formatted my drive and installed a clean copy of Mac Os. This time I did not upgrade my apple software , and the computer has not frozen yet. .....BUT... right now my desktop background is showing some very strange distortion and the pixels blink in strange colors.

Before I formatted, this dindt happen, but my computer froze.

It's frustrating. We can't even go to the store and change our iMacs, because we know We'll keep getting the same problems.

Try a different background picture, or try changing resolutions for a couple of seconds and then go back to your native resolution and see if that solves the background image problem for you.

I posted the following in the other iMac 1.1 update problem thread (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1107864&tstart=0), though my issue seems better related to this thread:

We have one 24" iMac here at work and it no longer boots. It gets all the way up to the desktop and then freezes. The only way to use the machine is the boot it in safe mode (hold shift at boot time).

The strange thing is, I never installed the 1.1 update, so whatever the problem is with the 24" iMac it's not just related to the 1.1 update. At this point I may try installing 1.1 to see if it will make it to the desktop.

Good thing we only ordered one machine for testing. This is making us reconsider ordering the other 5 we were going to...

Please fix this ASAP Apple, and give the users who had to deal with this something in return...

UPDATE: As of Friday (the 5th) I installed every OTHER update (iTunes, iPhoto, the updates that don't really matter because we don't use those programs) and now the machine boots fine. Very strange indeed. The woman who uses it says it's behaving better now, but we'll see how it works next week. Prior to it no longer booting, she said she would get random crashes in various apps (there are no games on the machine, Adobe CS3 suite, Quark, et).

There is definitely something wrong with this batch of iMacs. Hopefully Apple will indeed have it fixed before the end of the month.

    Ok. Apple aknowledged the issue.

But I need more infomation. What is causing the problem? ATI?

I experienced freezing with 1.1, now I experience weird ditortions and artifacts on my display with the "non Upgraded" software.

Apple store told me they had never heard of this problem... :O).. They offered a new iMac, but I didn't wan't to change my computer if it was not going to solve the issue.

I dont have an external drive, so I use a borrowed iMac as backup drive, but firewire 400 is Extremely slow to move my files even in T mode. I don't want to go through this again if it is not going to solve my problem

Apple? Should I keep my iMac and wait for a driver to solve this? Ask for a new computer right now? Or return the computer now and wait for an updated video card to replace my iMac?

I know guys at apple are the best in the business. Please Help us!

    Apple?
    ATI?

Yep my new 24" imac has the exact same problem. I used it for 2 hours and it froze twice, first time it was when imovie was running, and second was with final cut pro. Hurry up and fix it Apple! And why on earth is there an ATI card in this spanking machine instead of Nvidia???

"I formatted my drive and installed a clean copy of Mac Os. This time I did not upgrade my apple software , and the computer has not frozen yet. .....BUT... right now my desktop background is showing some very strange distortion and the pixels blink in strange colors."

you first wrote about that problme in a post on Oct. 7th. Maybe the two issues, in your case, are not related. perhaps you have a bad monitor.

Are you saying you have done another install since your first post or is this just a continuing problem from Oct. 7th that you are telling us about again?

Have you tried doing the 1.0 update but not the 1.1? Some of the updates that were released were for solving video issues. I don't remember all of your posts but if you didn't have the problem that you have now it might be worth trying the 1.0 update and see if it solves the particular issue you are having or not.

I"t's frustrating. We can't even go to the store and change our iMacs, because we know We'll keep getting the same problems."

That is not true and you have no facts to back that up. Even if 30% if the iMac's sold have this issue, which is an absurdly high figure you would still have a 70% chance of getting one that did not have the problem.

    Hi AL,

    Thanks for your reply.

When I bought my computer I updated all of apple' s software and my computer started freezing. (The pizza wheel kept turning, and I could move my cursor, but nothing else)

After a few days of posting and after trying to fix my iMac with scans and other suggestions, I tried reinstalling Mac Os, with no apple updates. Thats when I got the Weird artifacts on my screen ( I took pictures of them). I turned the computer off, then back on and the problem dissappeared but returned after a few hours.

After that I formatted my hard drive to take the computer back to the store and UPDATED all the software.

But the store had only one 24' in stock with a Dead pixel right in the middle, so I didnt take it home.

Came back to my house and started using my iMac..and No freezes..

Since then I have tried installing one software at a time. (Till now: ilife, Lightroom, Msn, Skype, iphone, Office test drive, Firefox, etc.) and my computer has not frozen Once since the last Mac Os Install. (Tonight I will install Photoshop and Aperture to see what happens)

I have all my music and photos in the hard drive.

The only thing I did different this time is that I did not copy-paste the preferences from my Old iMac into this one.

    I hope the problem's gone!

I had a lot of freezing problems. With Aperture 100% of the times and now I'm working with the same computer after a clean install, with 100% of Apple's updates installed and No problems Yet. ( I keep my computer on 24 hours, sometimes with iphoto, itunes, Dvd player, Lightroom and Word open at the same time hoping to make it freeze)

    I'll keep you updated.

Sosunds like you are making some progress at least. A lot of Aperture users are reporting having freezes when trying to use it so it may not be possible to use it until a fix for this issue comes out. At least we have the hope that Apple will have a fix by the end of the month like they stated.

I have not had a freeze in over a week but I also have not taxed the graphics cards. No Age of Empires and no heavy work in iphoto, just some light stuff. I did work in iWeb this morning and didn't have any problems.

I pretty much did what you did, reformatted and reinstalled although I did it from a pre 1.1 update backup copy on my external drive. In my case everything was working fine until that update. Since I did that, and didn't reinstall Age of Empires, I went ahead and tried the 1.1 update again and still no freezes. (talking about the same 1 week)

I do miss being able to play the one game that I actually do play, other than solitaire, and am looking forward to the fix so I can play it again. I really want to do more with iPhoto also. I have had the screen artifact issue a couple of times and when that happened I just saved my work and rebooted, just to be safe.

I don't blame you for not taking one home with a dead pixel rigth in the middle!

Aperture is 100% of the times freezing my iMac.

I downloaded the new Aperture Trial and it doesnt work with my iMac.

Aperture Froze my computer in less than 5 minutes.

This is the first freeze in a week.

FWIW My new 24" Al iMac is freezing 1-2X/day, usually on waking from sleep or switching users.

Support as of Friday states there is no known problem, so if they've "acknowledged" it, the tech support staff aren' yet aware of it.

Open the software update preference pane and look at the list of installed updates under the installed updates tab. If you installed it there should be record of it there. It was released in September, sometime in the last half of the month if I remember correctly.

No, the support person you talked to may not be aware of it, even though he/she should be. That does not mean the staff is not aware of it.

Anyway Apple released a statement on Oct 4th (I believe) stating that they had received reports of the issue and were working on a fix. You can find it on Macworld's site.
