First this is a standard CD without a lable or anything. I tried to restart as it says in the support pages to open firmware and eject but can't get to firmware at all. It keeps trying to eject the CD but it can't.

Any thoughts, suggestions, etc. PLEASE!!!

Thanks, TWG

iMac, Mac OS X (10.4.10), intel iMac

    Hi TWG

Try dragging the disc's icon to the trash, if it still won't eject then try and restart the computer holding down the mouse button.

Still nothing. Just a white screen and noise of it trying to push it out. No icon on the desktop. It's extra frustrating without being able to see what is going on and if it stuck on something or what.

Any other thoughts? Why can't I get the firmware screen to come up?

    Thanks, TWG

Try and gently pinch and hold the top right hand corner of the case, then try again to eject the disk.

Sorry it seems the iMac's drive needs service

FInally got it out. I had to take some tape and tape back the fabric so I could see inside the slot. Apparently when I put the CD in I also put in the thin paper cover sheet that was on the bottom of the stack of CDs. Once I could see the CD, I took a thin metal (case cutter) with double stick tape on it. I slid it behind the CD (side away from the monitor) hit the eject button and pulled it out. Had to do the same thing with the paper.

Totally insane what I had to go through to get this baby out. I'll have to be more careful not to have that paper go in there with it.

Thanks and I hope this helps some else down the line.

I had same problem 2 times already! Always with DVD right after burning. First time it seems like left it alone for a couple minutes helped.
Second time it was worst, cause drive repeatedly tried to eject DVD out, but all it sounded like some mechanical problem. Spining, clicking, pushing, nothing comes out, aver and over again. After some picking with paperclip DVD suddenly ejects.
Never before gets in such trouble with just reading CDs or DVDs. Meybe there is some mechanical issue coming up with heating up during burning? Anyway... it's pretty anoying and makes me scared to put any disc in!

    PS: Sorry for my english.

What about the thin flat metal "guard" just inside the optical drive slot. It is aprox. 2 centimeters long vertically. I figured how to finagle it to one side but it doesn't move far enough toward the back of the computer to let the disc pass if I were to yank out the disc. Also I only have about three or four seconds to pull out the disc using the strip of metal with the double back tape on before the disc begins to spin again as if I had just put in a disc.

When should the "guard" move toward the back of the computer in the eject sequence?
Can I trigger it with a keyboard command? (I can dream can't I?)
Do other optical drives, MATSHITADVD-R UJ-85J, have this or am I particularly blessed?
Does the deployment of this guard mean I have done something particularly evil and am as doomed as Max Headroom?

I am a machinist and if I ever get this sucker out I promise to measure it in all dimensions down to a thousandth of a millimeter and post it here. I measured all the other Sony discs in the ten pack and they are remarkably the same notably the center hole and thickness; of coarse they vary some but all are within the same tolerance range disc to disc. Perhaps the stuck disc is singular in one or more dimensions.

Along those lines I viewed the discs under magnification. I found a microscopic bur on the label side of the disc but a nicely finished surface on the business side of the disc. I mention this because perhaps this extremely small bur had gotten turned inward toward the mounting cone in the drive on the stuck disc and could be causing the effective hole size to be smaller than acceptable

. . .for those who haven't been following the saga I have an intel iMac 17" 2007 I bought in January '07 and just want the disc out because the lag while it reads the stuck disc is an inconvenience. I have determined for the most part warranting this with another same drive is a waste of time. I am using an external drive to write to (iomega Super DVD 2008 model) because it is inexpensive and it is fast enough for the little that I want to do with it.

Any body know how peabrain is doing? Haven't heard how he is faring after taking in his mac for the same problem. Hang in there man there can be happiness after the big "D".

In reference to my . . . what about metal "guard" . . . post that I just entered:

I wanted to edit my post to say two things
    1. besides being directed to everyone out there I am replying specifically to TWG.

    2. To newbees like myself please note that the person you think you maybe replying to may be different than who is next to (above you) in the list of posts. Look in the top of the post where you are clicking "reply" and that is who you are replying to.

Same thing happened to me, while burning quite a few DVD's. After waiting a while and then using the 'pinching the case' method, it came out, though with a obvious struggle. Is it caused from the expansion of the metal when the burning creates heat??? I want an answer!

This happened to me and what finally worked for me..and without much effort and no tape or blades or any tool... restart computer and tilt the computer on it's side while holding the mouse button down and low and behold it spit it out..you can hold it over to the edge of your desk while holdingthe mouse button down... don't drop it.... cheers

all this for putting a dirty disk in the player
