Printers not in list - how can I add them?

After upgrading to OSX 10.5. then to 10.5.1, I can no longer print to either my HP Laserjet 1300 or Canon S900 printers. 'No printer selected' the drop down panel says, but I can't add them because they aren't on the list. Even after downloading the drivers afresh, I still can't add them!

What's going on? I've read through all the relevant posts but can't distil the reasons for my problem, let alone how to fix it. Can someone please explain concisely what I should do to get printing again?
Mac Pro 3GHz, Mac OS X (10.5.1), HP LaserJet 1300, Canon S900, Canon 9900F
