I've got this issue too.. running iPhone with 1.1.2 firmware, Mac Mail 3.1 (that comes with OS X 10.5). All folders matched (i.e. iphone and mail using the same trash folder).

My messages are disappearing from my trash (i usually keep items in there for 90 days before doing a real delete).

Looks like from reading this thread that the phone is the suspect, i will set it to use a different trash folder and see if that helps.

This shouldn't be marked as solved though, thats a bad work around.

Quick question for the others out there...

Do you have iTunes/iPhone set to sync your email? i.e. in the settings tabs, does it sync you mail when you sync your phone?

Nope, I connect directly to my servers via IMAP, no iTunes-Mail-Sync here.

But I reconfirm that the trash does not empty automatically since updating to 1.1.2 two weeks ago. Can confirm this for Gmail, .mac, Exchange 2003, Exchange 2007 and CommuniGatePro servers.

Agreed...the 1.1.2 update still does not solve this problem for me.

Strange. Did you guys just update or had a restore and started the email accounts all over again. I had to set them up from scratch again. Maybe this was the trick after updating to 1.1.2.

I am sure the fix of my problem is related to the 1.1.2 update as there were no changes on the servers whatsoever.

This was one of the most annoying computer/email problems I have ever had. I spent weeks creating new user accounts, new IMAP accounts, and reinstalling leopard, mail, etc... And every day I looked in my trash only to see my mail disappearing....

Then I read this discussion thread. Although the workaround is not a clean solution...it works.

Also, 1.1.2 does nothing to fix this issue....unless I am missing something.

Thanks for the information from all of you.

Whats the workaround that you are using? setting your iphone to use its own trash folder?

I can only repeat. Since I am running 1.1.2 the problem is gone on all accounts. Maybe I should add that I have not simply upgraded but RESTORED the phone to 1.1.2 and made a complete clean setup from scratch.

the work around is to designate a different trash folder on the iphone than on your mac.

i have not done a complete restore in 1.1.2. Just an upgrade. I will try that to see if it works as well.

hopefully someone else in the mean time can confirm this as well before I go through this complete restore.

After some experimentation using a dedicated [Gmail]/iPhoneTrash folder in GMail/IMAP, I've made some discoveries:
    1) Iphone Mail will empty the trash almost immediately (i.e. within one day) if the Deleted Messages setting is set for "Remove: Never". This is obviously a bug.
    2) Best workaround I could find is to use one of the other "Remove" settings. For example, I now use "Remove: After one month".
    3) "After one month", means one month after the mail was sent, NOT one month after you trashed it. A little odd, but may be intentional.

The first issue (trash emptying when set to "Remove: never") is clearly an iPhone bug, NOT a server and/or Mail.app issue.

PS. I am still on iPhone firmware 1.1.1, but comments here seem to indicate the bug is still in 1.1.2.

Same issue here. iPhone upgraded to 1.1.2. Imap to .Mac, because I need another smtp server to get the right email address out. The iPhone mail settings set Remove to Never.

I did a test like this. An email of two weeks old was moved into the Trash on my MacBook. On my iPhone I could see the message appear -and disappear.

Then I set the iPhone mail settings to Remove After one month. Again moved an old email to the Trash on the iMac. It looks like it stays for now. Will keep you posted.

After a couple of hours I can confirm that the iPhone setting in 1.1.2 of Remote to After one month is still working.
