Hi all,

It seems I have a similar problem as many others here: After Leopard my 1.6gHz G5 (single) does not wake up from sleep.

The datails?

When the computer goes to sleep itself (after 2 hrs--set in Energy Saver) it does not wake up.

BUT if I put it to sleep myself (puching the monitor button or using the menu option) then it wakes up just fine.

Weird but true..

Any ideas?
Thanks,

It's hard to help you when you say your Mac model is a Cheese Grater! Please update your settings!
    This applies to most Macs;

If your Mac happily goes to sleep but won't wake up--Hold down the power switch to force-reboot your machine and get it running again.
Don't worry-your Mac isn't narcoleptic. Its Open Firmware system or NVRAM (nonvolatile RAM) is likely corrupt, and your Mac can't remember how to wake up.
Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Command-Option-O-F key combo until you see a somewhat intimidating command-line display that ends with the Open Fimware prompt. Type the following line:

    reset-nvram
press the return key on your keyboard
    set-defaults
    press return
    reset-all
    press return
Your Mac will reboot. Once it's running, put it back to sleep to test. If the problem recurs your Energy Saver preferences may be the culprit. Delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file (go to Finder/Hard drive/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration)--don't worry, your Mac will regenerate a new one--and then restart to see if that rights the wrong.
Still didn't work? Might be time to call AppleCare or see an Apple Genius or a technician.

You also might try one or both of the following:

-Power down your cheese grater, disconnect the power cord and remove the battery (if it has one). Then Hold down the power button for about 10 seconds. Reconnect the battery and power supply and start up as normal.

-Power down your Cheese grater. Press the power button as usual but immediately hold down the Command-Option-P-R keys, until you hear TWO startup sounds. The let go of the keys and let it start up normally.

These procedures should accomplish the same as the previous post, without having to deal with command lines.

    Thanks guys!

You all are the first to get on my case about the Cheese Grater-- aka a G5 tower...

I didn't think of resetting the PRAM. Thanks I'll try it & let ya kno.

And then I'll try the prefs too. Thanks!

Thanks I'll try em & let you know.

    Thanks,

Yeah I got it from MacAddict back when the G5 first came out. It was their parody on the back page... (Mack when MacAddict was good.)

    Of yes! I remember that!
I liked MacAddict but don't care too much for the new version!

(PS PDF creation from anywhere was the original coolest feature on OS X)

The last few issues of Maclife have gotten better!
I have a ways to go before renewal, so I'll give it more time.
I miss the CD's MacAddict sent with the mag.

    Dual 1.8 G5 Mid 2004 (PowerMac7,3) problems with Sleep...

    (1) Does not go completely to sleep: no throbbing power light, fans continue to run.
    (2) Does not awake properly from this semi-sleepy state: screen visible, cursor moves, keyboard works, but no mouse input...

Since keyboard works I can force quit everything, relaunch finder, eject disks, etc., but nothing ever happens until -- after mucking about aimlessly -- I lose patience and depress the power button for the required time to make the system hard shutdown.

In my desperate state I checked the console logs to see what was going on...two things I noticed: Logitech's LCC tool loses touch with the computer around the time of sleep, One PCI Card by Seri-Tek seems to record odd issues related to sleep awareness (a patch is available), and One PCI Card by Miglia AlchemyTV DVR does not even seem to be recognized.

I used Disk Utility to repair all my drives since I had to force the system to shutdown, some other poster suggested this proactive action.
I deleted the suggested com.apple.Power' files suggested by another poster here.
I reset PRAM, no improvement with sleeping, but it appears to awake properly in the last 5 attempts.
I updated my Seri-Tek1SE2 RAID PCI card to version 5.3.1b1 as suggested by the company.

Since the Seri-Tek website seems to indicate the upgrade had something to do with sleep issues, I suspect the combined impact of the above actions could have improved the situation, however, the Miglia PCI card impact on stability is unclear--I may pull it.

    End result of this activity...

    (1) Still does not go completely to sleep: no throbbing power light, fans continue to run.
    (2) Does appear to consistently awake from this semi-sleepy state if left sleeping for 5-10 minutes.

I tried resetting PRAM, resetting the firmware (reset-nvram, etc), and throwing out the power preference plist on my Mac Mini (PPC). I also did an archive and install. Still my Mac Mini, when it goes to sleep on its own, will not wake up from sleep.

    Should I give up?

Not sure if this will help, but I was having the same issues. The problem seems to have been a result of my wireless logitech mouse/keyboard. Updating to the latest version (2.40) of the Logitech Control Center (released 11/20/07) appears to have fixed the problem. At least it's been great for the last 18 hours.

Others who were experiencing this problem and using other Logitech mice also fixed it by using the SteerMouse utility, which supports the idea that the Logitech Control Center (LCC) is the culprit.

I would try downloading the latest version from the Logitech site.

Don't know which of the following two items did it, but my waking from sleep problem is gone on my Mac Mini PPC:

    1) Repaired permissions. I had tried this previously but when it was taking so long I would just cancel it. Finally, after reading these discussions about how repairing permissions has changed under Leopard (i.e., it takes forever), I put in my 20 minutes or so and it actually finished the process.

    2) I updated to iTunes 7.5. This could have been the answer also as my iTunes library is stored on an external hard drive (which was actually shutting off for some reason when the waking from sleep problem was occurring), so maybe this new iTunes version, which is designed for Leopard, saved the day.

Either way, I am again a happy camper.
