I also have been using apples since buying my first apple ][ however, I also have been programming for UNIX for 10 years, Old MacOS wouldn't let any program do this EVER windows won't let any program do this EVER standard UNIX won't let any program do this EVER. OS X will let a program do this, and there's not always a warning, there's usually only a warning in Finder but not third party programs.

The reason why third party programs wouldn't see such a warning is poorly implemented debugging techniques. I suspect the problem since it doesn't exist in the Finder is one that is a misplaced directory path, or an improperly executed recursive wildcard delete command for files, not a replace command.

so really if i'm not worried about the old files, how do i get the desktop back?
I can't copy or paste or save anything to it? I restarted from the cd, command c, disc utilities, repair....and it did not work. do i have to do a complete reinstall, just to get the desktop icon back up and functioning? Please advise?

That would be all well and good brody except, upon installing this update users end up with a binary FILE ~/Desktop in their home folder (in case you don't understand tilde). Upon moving something else to your desktop or playing with it just a little bit, that file gets replaced with the folder ~/Desktop. As you make no indication that you have experienced this bug yourself, let's assume you didn't. I did, and have already recovered my files, please stop impeding understanding if you really think that this issue does not exist see below.

I believe this issue stems from the actions of NSWorkspace, but I'm not sure, I haven't written for Cocoa in a long time. See here: http://rixstep.com/2/20070210,00.shtml and here http://rixstep.com/1/20061220,00.shtml this exact thing happened with an update of Safari in the past. OOPS I was wrong, it's NSFileManager, shows what I know, darn my lowly 10 years of programming.

Anyway, Yes INTUIT blundered but this blunder would never be possible on anything but OS X not even MacOS 9 and down.

marz you need to stop using your computer (like shut it down) and get in touch with a local data recovery specialist, they can help you out. Your files are unlinked and probably salvagable, just STOP USING the computer until you talk to a data recovery guy/gal.

I too have lost my desktop. I am unable to wait for data recovery and need to use this computer. Does anyone know how to restore the proper desktop functionality. I will worry about data recovery later as my data is non critical(sort of).I have been promised a call from Intuit tech support but so far am just waiting. Anyone who can help me?

Like I keep saying the issue isn't Finder programs don't use Finder to move stuff around they use the API. The issue is the API, there are more things going on in your computer than .apps running.

delete the binary Desktop file in your home folder and create a new folder called Desktop there, you will have functionality back.

Just received an unsolicited order confirmation from Intuit for a copy of QB 2007. As I didn't order it, I am wondering why this is being done. Any thoughts Intuit?

Although I appreciate the gesture, I would have really appreciated a similar discount for version 2008, as that is what I have been waiting for to upgrade.

Didn't this same data loss issue happen with QB 2007? (I'm a QB 2006 user)

Interesting. Anyone else getting order confirmations?

I'm on a cloned drive with mail disabled (don't want it both places), waiting for Intuit to help recover my desktop files. I'll pay for a program if I have to, meanwhile I'll wait and see if Intuit provides fix.

I'm with you. Although I lost data due to 2006, I also have 2007 and since both have been buggy since the start, I'd rather get 2008 (free). Personally, I haven't been happy since QB version 4, late 90s and beyond until they made it impossible to use.

I haven't read this entire thread but I'm having the same issue. Desktop gone. I'm also having other issues: I can't download anything in either Firefox or Safari. Photoshop will only do text in UPPER CASE. I can't put anything on my desktop, can't create a folder and if I go in my users folder, the icon for desktop is no longer a folder and can't be opened. The G5 doesn't show up as a networked device on my Powerbook and my Powerbook doesn't show up as a networked device on the G5. (But my PC does...weird.)

I also did Mac software update about the same time everything exploded.

    Dying here. Any help?

No data loss with QB 2007. Different issue. Plus, the 2007 update gave you a choice whether to accept or not.
Ironically, in the past QB 2007 always updated automatically, which I hated, so I was grateful for the choice.
QB 2006, gave a choice also ("cancel") which did nothing to stop the carnage.

    Thank You krazytekno.
New desktop is up and running.
    Your knowledge is greatly appreciated.
    Merry Christmas

if your desktop files were important you need to stop using your computer and contact a Data Recovery Specialist. If you don't care about that, delete the file in your home folder named Desktop and create a new folder named Desktop. This should fix most of your troubles. (I don't see how the Photoshop thing is related though)
