Itunes told me that there was software update 1.2 available for my itouch so i went ahead and updated it. something happend and now my itouch is stuck in recovery mode. itunes recognizes that it is in recovery mode yet i cannot restore it. i click on the restore button and it asks me if i'm sure then i click on the "restore and update" button. it gets to "preparing ipod for restore" then it tells me that unknown error 1604 occured and then it starts all over.

i've tried that hold the sleep and home button thing a few times still no luck.
someone save my ipod!!!!

This problem is affecting several people including me. I have got it running properly again, though a bit of trial and error seems necessary. Disconnect from your computer. Shutdown your computer. Leave iPod for over 12 hours. Then try again. It has worked for me.

So now I have updated iTunes to version 7.6 and downloaded the new 1.1.3 software, why does the upgrade iPod process still end with a hung iPod and another 1604 error!!!

This is the third attempt at iPod touch software and it still does not work. Now I am starting to get annoyed.

    Can anyone help please?

This won't work because, it isn't possible to power off the device as the normal screens do not appear - in particular the switch off screen with the red slider. I get a faintly displayed connect to computer picture quite often and all works fine till the last window that tells me that the iPod is restarting and will appear in the iTunes device list in 15 seconds. After these, the iPod hangs with the 1603/4 error.

When connection reveals the unit to be in recovery mode, I click all the right buttons required but the restore process hangs again on completion. This can be repeated several time but the problem remains. After 24 hours it make a better attempt, but still fails about 70% of the time. There is an issue here which others are affected by. I did expect the 1.1.3 update to address this but it does not seem to have done this.

I contacted AppleCare having exhausted other possibilities. I think they have solved the problem, which IS software based. Follow these 2 articles including the use of the iSync utility and I think you will solve the problem too:
