Q: Dual Quad-core Mac Pro reboots from sleep

My brand-new Mac Pro nearly always restarts rather than waking up from sleep. Just now I left it to go to sleep by itself and came back two or three hours later. When I touched the space bar, it restarted.

I have an IOGear firewire hub plugged in with nothing attached to it and lots of USB devices plugged in.

Do any of you have the "restart on power failure" setting in Energy Saver?

    I don't.

I've changed Energy Saver settings to allow the monitors and hard drives to sleep, but not the processor, and thus far, no more surprise reboots.

I've not yet installed virtualization software (haven't decided yet between VMWare and Parallels), but my guess is this problem could really mess up a virtualized Windows installation.

I've read about problems with Energy Saver, but didn't realize there is now an option (again, from G5 days?) for processors.

Something like "automatic, high, reduced" setting, AND some kind of sleep setting?

I've seen some threads on Parallels that would keep me away for now, and I'd wait for Fusion 1.2 or whatever. And how to fix it w/ firmware and OS patches?

I should have been more precise. The options are to sleep the whole computer (including processors and cards), the hard drives, or just the screen. So, there's not reduced power consumption setting for the processors independent of anything else.

As far as how this will get fixed? Who knows. I certainly HOPE it doesn't mean a new motherboard! My guess is that it's some software glitch that might get fixed in 10.5.2, or perhaps a machine-specific update...

Hey hey hey, count me in too. Brand new 3.O gHz, reboots upon hitting the keyboard after several hours asleep. Gonna try the advice given here.

netdog from the Mac Rumors forums suggests running this: FSCK -fy
in the console. Says that fixed the problem.

You should always run FSCK after a hard restart, not to cure the issue with Mac Pro, but because of potential damage to the drive's directory.

And not from the terminal, but from single user mode command line.

Count me in. I have the same problem with the 2.8

I reset the PRAM and it seemed to fix the problem. Then a week later it happened again. This time I reset the SMC and PRAM and so far it has been sleeping just fine.

I hope all that is needed is a software/firmware update.

May as well add me to the list too- maybe with enough noise, Apple will offer a proper fix for the problem?

Again, I have brand new Mac Pro 2.8x8 with the same problem. I did the PRAM and SMC resets which seems to have fixed it for the time being, but I'd rather a proper fix than to have it happen again- unplugging everything is such an unnecessary inconvenience!

I'll just chime in to say that I have started experiencing this, right after adding 8GB of 3rd party memory. I'll try the PRAM and SMC resets and see if that fixes it.

Also try with just the 3rd party memory.
Could you mention where / what it is?

I have the same problem with MacPro 2.8 2x quadcore early 2008. When I wake up from sleep the MP reboots. I have only 2 Gb original RAM. An external FireWire HD (chip Oxford) is always connected to the MacPro. Power supply from an UPS.

I thought my mac pro (8-core 2.8) was not prone to reboot by itself when awaken, but it did it today for the first time after a night of sleep...

Darn. I thought this wouldn't be a problem for myself, either, but my MP just did it for the first time a little while ago - also after an overnight sleep.

My MP has also been turning itself on every 24 hours at 4pm, but that's a totally separate (or is it?) issue...

Same Problem here, new MP 8 core 2,8 lots of firewire and usb stuff. NO additional RAM or other internal upgrades.
Reboots every time he was asleep over night.
I tried resetting the SMC and the PRAM, nothing works for me

I hope Apple will fix this soon!
