Time Machine Error

    I experienced the same error message after wiping a partition on the same drive as the Time Machine backups. I removed the .plist for Time Machine and opened TM Prefs and selected the drive which caused the error message. The backup was performed without touching the past backups. I went back in "time" to the original backup and all was in place. Throw the Time Machine Preferences (com.apple.TimeMachine.plist) in the trash and open TM Prefs.

    My time machine after 10 weeks of operation has started the can't complete back up message, won't eject with message still in use.

    Have changed computer name and removed " ' " from name, TM's name is " Time Machine "

    Whilst reading this forum I'v started TM and it completed is job no problem ?? this is with the original computer name with " ' " in it.

    I'v also copied all my files manually to the same drive without any problems so I guess the drive is OK

    Lost all my history from early november 07

    As with others TM has become unreliable will it work this time or not will I loss my backups this time or not

    Very annoying I'v moved from PC to iMac for it's reliability but TM isn't

    Just adding my results to add to the list

    "Let's face it people, TM is buggy. Sure works for some people, but the "solution" people have discovered on this thread is NOT a solution.

    Exclude Library, System and Applications folders from TM to get it to work? Those are the most important files! What a joke. There's no point in using any backup program if you can't backup the most important stuff. Sign...

    I'm gonna try one last time a suggestion on this board. I refuse to exclude those folders in any of my backups.

    And if it doesn't work, no more TM until a reliable patch is found. I've wasted too much of my time tinkering with this goddam problem. "

    I have a Powermac dual 2.5.
    Apple installed identical internal drives
    One working drive
    One for Time machine
    \No spurious characters in either name
    Correctly partitioned with Disk Utility.

    Hi I have been running Time Machine successfully since I bought my iMac in October. Suddenly for the last few days I keep getting the TM errors that it is unable to complete a backup. An error occurred while creating the backup directory.

    I've got the latest leopard updates in place. This is my first Mac so I'm not willing to tinker without specific instructions. Would like to get this fixed as my backups are very important to me like everyone else.

    Same Here. I've had little or no trouble with Time Machine since I started using Leopard. Then in the middle of last week I started getting the same error message everyone else here is getting. I'm running TM on a GUID formatted WD FireWire drive with a small partition used as a TechTool Pro eDrive and the rest dedicated to backup. I erased the backup partition, but it did not help. I finally chose to go back to Retrospect Express until 10.5.2 comes out.

    I'm wondering whether installing QuickTime 7.4 broke something. Sounds like it broke a few commercial applications. One wouldn't think it should be related in any way to Time Machine, but who knows?

    Following up to my previous post in which I hypothesized:

    I may have been on to something! I used Pacifist to overwrite QuickTime 7.4 with version 7.3.1, repaired permissions, and Time Machine started working again. It's been going about two days now, and it always finishes with "Backup completed successfully."

    The first time after the downgrade that I launched iTunes, I got a complaint that I wouldn't be able to rent movies unless I updated QuickTime. Well, I don't have enough bandwidth to do that anyway. No loss there. What I may be losing is the supposedly beefier security QuickTime 7.4 is supposed to offer.

    I don't suppose this hint will be of any use to those of you who have never gotten Time Machine to work. I'm still hoping for those Mac OS X 10.5.2 and QuickTime 7.4.1 before the Easter Bunny comes.

    I have completely given up trying to use Time Machine with my Lacie Drive. I have tried everything I could think of, researched the Apple forum, MacCommunity Forums, read everything I could get my eyes on, spoke to an endless list of IT folks. The solution for TM has got to be the 10.5.2 update that everyone is waiting for.
    Let's see what happens then.

    Mine was fine till 10.5.2 was installed.
    So much for hoping that would fix it.
    I'm going back to Superduper. It's a solid stable back up, and it's bootable.
    The Time machine concept is a good one, but they need to work out the bugs, I guess.

    So far my experience is that TM is one of the worst features Apple has ever added to OSX.

    My experience is the opposite, but it is a shame that it does not work for everyone.
    After a small initial setup hiccup, TM now backs up my entire system with almost no intervention from me (just plugging in my external USB drive every few days). Never has backing up been easier. Looking forward to getting Time Capsule - then it be literally a no-brainer.

    Been having several issue backing-up with time machine on a Mac Mini G4. I thought for sure that this was due to the lack of processing power.

    However, the most troubling of all, has been what many of you have run into: SLOW, or stalled back-ups. After many attempts, I think I found the bug.

    I'm backing-up several LaCie drives to a MyBook (Western Digital) 2 terabyte drive.
    The back-up drive is formatted as Extended (journaled) and was stalling after numerous attempts.
    To solve the problem and THIS WORKED, I disabled "put hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" in the Energy Saver control panel in system preferences.

    It seems that while you are performing a back-up to Time Machine, if this option is checked, your drives will somehow spin down, and stop progressing. Once this happens, there's no apparent way to get the back-up going. So try again, after having disabled this featured in energy saver, and you might be back on your way. Worked for me!

    Hopefully Apple will fix this bug in the next update.
