Q: Apple Wireless Keyboard won't pair

My Apple wireless keyboard won't pair with my MacBook Pro running Leopard 10.5.1. Until a few hours ago, it's been working fine. It's an older keyboard (white). It also won't pair any longer with an iBook G4 running Leopard 10.5.1. I've tried most of the suggestions on the various discussion threads without success.

One unique finding I hope that will help someone find a solution: If I use Bluetooth asst and select keyboard, it will not find it. If however, I use 'any device' the keyboard is seen and named 'Apple Wireless Keyboard' but the type is listed as 'unknown'. This tells me that the keyboard is sending and the Mac is receiving, but something is missing in the identification. I've tried continuing with the Any Device option but the pairing is never successful. (I've tried all the various passkey options.)

Hopefully Apple will fix this soon!

MacBook Pro 2.4 Core 2 Duo, Mac OS X (10.5.1)

Past 2-3 weeks, my apple bluetooth KB has been disconnecting repeatedly and now doesn't seem to pair with my mac mini. Tried the suggested firmware update but that did not improve the situation and have had to switch to a wired keyboard for the time being.

I thought about performing an upgrade to Leopard, but from what I have read that does not help.

I still have warranty for my keyboard. So I went to an Apple dealer and gave it back. Yesterday I got a new one. Unfortunately it was an english keyboard (I'm german), so I gave it back again. In a few days I should have a new one. At the Apple dealer we made some tests. The keyboard didn't work with Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5.

You can add me to the list too. I installed Leopard in October 07 and over the past few days noticed my white wireless apple KB would no longer connect when I was in bootcamp (the darkside). But today it is just completely undiscoverable on the mac side, although it still appears in my drop down list under my BT icon. Have changed batteries, still no luck.

An update: I have discovered that a new powered USB Hub triggers the bluetooth problems on my Mac. If I disconnect the powered USB 2.0 hub (CP Technologies), powerdown and reboot, Bluetooth (and my Apple bluetooth keyboard) work fine. For this system, it is clearly USB related. I hope Apple resolves this regretful situation quickly...

I hoped that 10.5.2 would change something with our problem... But there isn't even a word about bluetooth in the list of fixed bugs... Well, my white wireless keyboard still won't pair...

The problem just showed up on my iMac G5 -- suddenly the keyboard stopped working, and apparently it is no longer detected by my Mac. I assumed it was a bug in the latest update, since I just finished installing it. Given the widespread and sudden appearance of this problem I'm guessing that there is a bug in some recently installed software (though maybe not the 10.5.2 update).

I'm still using 10.4.11. Had a similar problem. Make sure your computers is "Discoverable" by checking under the BT icon in the top right corner of the screen. Then use the BT setup assistant like normal. Made the difference for me. Hope this helps.

I was having this same problem on a PowerBook G4 with Leopard, and disconnecting all of my USB devices helped.

I tried disconnecting all USB devices and restarting my MBP. The results were the same. The keyboard was not recognized as a keyboard, but under any device it was, as always, recognized but as an unknown type device.

What seems to strange is that this seems to be impacting folks under both 10.4 and 10.5.

You might try make a fresh pairing of the wireless keyboard after disconnecting the USB devices and restarting without the the USB connected. For me, it is a powered USB that I have to leave disconnected. Then I made a new pairing for the keyboard and it has maintained itself.

If I reconnect the powered USB hub, at the next restart the keyboard is unavailable. Then I disconnect the hub, restart, and they keyboard is available without repairing. I hope that helps... at least temporarily.

After a house power failure my keyboard wouldn't pair, although the mouse did. My wife has a Macbook that did not go off during the power failure so the keyboard paired with that instead. After eliminating the keyboard from her Bluetooth device list, my keyboard paired again with my Mac Mini.

Many thanks to the discussions for this solution. I never would have thought of it myself even though I've been a Mac user from the beginning.
