There is good free authoring and edit tool called MyDVDEdit. A warning, it's not for the faint hearted. The documentation is first rate, but it does require quite a thorough understanding of what you're doing.

To convert between formats a great tool is ffMpegx. Good luck

    Hi

    As sibe writes.

    And for the faint hearted.

    • Connect a miniDV tape Camera to a DVD-player and copy. Use this.
    • Or use a program like Roxio Toast™ that can convert DVDs back to streamingDV
    for iMovie etc.

    Don't violate Copyright laws.

Handbrake works great for creating .MP4 files.
