not quite sure how to do it by just transferring preferences files but you can do this:
Boot from your old drive, go to the address book and go to File menu->Export address book archive. In ical do File menu->back up ical.
Then boot up from internal and import those files into Address book and ical respectively (do restore... for ical).PowerBook G4 17'', 1.5GHz, Mac OS X (10.5.2), Mac Pro 2.66GHz, Mac Pro 3.2GHz
Unfortunately the reason I installed leopard on a new hard drive is because I bodged my old one up beyond repair, and even the apple store guys couldn't erase it and install leopard on it. Just unlucky i guess, but luckily, somehow I can still access the files on it when plugged into my new mac so i managed to recover lost data, but i can't boot the hard drive up to try that method or i would have done it already thanks for the reply though MacBook, Mac OS X (10.4.11), | iPod Shuffle 1GB (2nd Gen) | iPhone 8GB (1.1.3)
In that case try importing the preference files.
make sure neither address book nor ical are running.
For the address book:
On the old HD go to Users/yourusername/Library.
Copy the folder Application Support/Address Book to the corresponding place on your internal drive.
Next go to directory Preferences and copy the files com.apple.AddressBook.plist and com.apple.AddressBook.abd.plist to the corresponding place on the internal drive.
Start the Address Book and see what happens.
If this works, we can try the same with ical.PowerBook G4 17'', 1.5GHz, Mac OS X (10.5.2), Mac Pro 2.66GHz, Mac Pro 3.2GHz
ok, this worked on my computer for address book so it should hopefully work for you too.
take the directory Users/yourusername/Libary/Calendars and the file Users/yourusername/Libary/Preferences/com.apple.iCal.plist and copy them to the corresponding places on your internal drive.
Start iCal. this worked for me too when I did it for two different accounts on the same computer.PowerBook G4 17'', 1.5GHz, Mac OS X (10.5.2), Mac Pro 2.66GHz, Mac Pro 3.2GHz
That worked perfectly thank you so much I'd have hated it if i had to sit and re-type them all out,

Which files should I copy for bookmarks and bookmark organization in Safari if you don't mind me asking?

move the folder Users/yourusername/Library/Safari over to the new computer.
In general, all local settings live in homedirectory/Library - you just have to find them.PowerBook G4 17'', 1.5GHz, Mac OS X (10.5.2), Mac Pro 2.66GHz, Mac Pro 3.2GHz
I was able to transfer Address Book as previously described.
But I am unable to transfer ical.
Could use help. The items transferred over, but nothing... its as if I just downloaded a new ical or something without any of my dates/birthdates/etc...Macbook Pro 2.2 Ghz, Mac OS X (10.5)
