Q: Dual Quad-core Mac Pro reboots from sleep

My brand-new Mac Pro nearly always restarts rather than waking up from sleep. Just now I left it to go to sleep by itself and came back two or three hours later. When I touched the space bar, it restarted.

I have an IOGear firewire hub plugged in with nothing attached to it and lots of USB devices plugged in.

    HI MacTim,
I installed the firmware update and stripped off add-ons down to original purchase equipment. It has been two weeks without a problem but this morning I noticed that whenever I grab an open window and move it, the movement is a little jerky rather than smooth. Hope this is not indicative of the "slow-buildup-accumulation" that seems characteristic of this problem. Tomorrow I plan to add back my 8 gigs of owc memory to see how things go.

If you want some comedy, try this out (which I did recently): Go into the apple store and put a mac pro to sleep. Wake it up, and sure enough....gong....restart.

Usually the models in the apple store are the good ones, but not this time. It's a widespread issue.

    Yeah, I know
I tried this in 2 of the 3 NYC stores, and now in LA (Grove). ALL of them 'bonged' on queue - and one of the NYC ones has the nvidia card installed (i.e. this issue is not limited / caused by the ATI Card)....

Alright, here's what worked for me.

Bought new 2.8 Octo Mac Pro. Added 2 gigs ram from OWC. Added Western Digital 750g hard drive into bay 2 as my new startup drive. Had the reboot issue.

Tried the reset PRAM & SMC....no dice.

Swapped my startup drive into bay 1, then reset PRAM & been working ever since.

    So...there you have it.

    Chad,
    thanks for posting.
There MIGHT be a pattern with the disk. The Baltimore Sun Computer columnist said something similar. However, this is hard to universally apply:
I for example have 3 drives total in my system: the one in the first bay has ALWAYS been the startup disk (and only startup disk), while bay 2 and 3 are raided (actually, striped) via Raid 0.
Nothing in Bay 4. Still, I have the reboot on sleep-awake problem.

What is odd, and I tried this on 2 systems now, that when initially booting to DVD and partioning drives, the unix drive level (and slices the GUI shows) aren't sync with the bays. That is, the drive in bay one might show up as DISK2 and so forth - which SHOULD not be a problem, but is odd (usually drive bay 1 (or 0) should mean disk1 for the unpartitioned space.....).

    Cheer

I've put my startup disk in every single bay and the problem continues. Deselecting the startup disk is the only thing that has worked consistently for me so far.

Is there anyone for whom deselecting the startup disk HASN'T worked?

It's the one thing I haven't tried yet, and will do so tonight. Did you de-select via PRAM reset (and then NOT selecting any), or by selecting a firewire or other device that you then removed while off?

    thanks

Plugged in FW drive, selected as boot drive, shut down, unplugged FW drive. Could do same with Apple install DVD.

That may not quite do the same thing. You still selected a drive, just not a local drive. Best to zap it clear...

..though when the FW drive it removed, the 'selected' device is no longer there - and hence no startup disk would be selected, no? Not to say PRAM reset might not be 'safer' or more thorough...

Exactly. I did both though, as I recall.

Hey sw_i_t_t_e_rs, hatter, etal , just thought I would update that the "issue" still has yet to return since Feb 24, so now passing the month milestone. Still no drive selected in the Startup Disk Pref Pane and haven't reset the PRAM or SMC since either.

Side note, I think that maybe everyone should start going to Apple Stores and start putting all the MP's on display to sleep. Maybe all the rebooting "bongs" will garner some attention from the public and perhaps it may force at least some response out of corporate. Perhaps just a little civil disobedience is in order? Just a thought.

I'm convinced that deselecting any start-up drive is the answer to this problem, for me anyway. I haven't had any reboot on wake as long as the drive isn't highlighted. I've gone back to highlighting the startup drive as a test and then I have the reboot.

    Sandylp and sleep deprived users,
Don't know how it happened but after reading through the thread, I checked my startup disk preferences and discovered that no drives were selected, and it has been two weeks since the sleep problem reared its ugly dong. I'm putting in my owc memory now and will let you know how things go.

I was told by Apple care to do an archive-reinstall, and it appears that there is no longer a disk selected, and so far, no problems!!!! Lets hope it keeps up!
