Mar 28, 2008 6:30 AM in response to yvonnejimby jdhayes117,I agree that it is premature to declare victory. Several of the other suggested fixes appeared to work, only to recur later.
I thought the installation was a bit confusing. Using Software Update, I installed (or thought I installed...) the software several times. After the installer said it finished and that my Firmware should show the new code, I restarted, only to find that it still showed the old code. I did this several times, to no avail. (full disclosure...I'm a recent returnee to the ways of Mac after having been seduced for the last decade by the ways of the dark side. My last Mac was a IIvx and ran OS 7 or 8 or something. So for you veterans, please excuse my buffoonery...). In any case, I finally went to the Apple Support website, found the update, downloaded it and read the accompanying documentation (which doesn't pop up when you use Software Update). It said to Shutdown, then restart holding the Power Button. That worked and my Sys Profile showed the new Firmware code. The point of all this...there is more to installing this firmware than meets the eye when you use Software Update.
As for the fix, I have had no issues with rebooting after sleep since applying this update. I've probably tried it half a dozen times. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
Finally, I wish Apple would tell us specifically what this Firmware Update is intended to address and whether it is actually intended to fix the rebooting issue. I see no value to the company in being secretive about fixing a simple hardware issue. Every company has them, it's the nature of the business. -
Mar 28, 2008 8:35 AM in response to transplant6by glideslope,I'll declare victory then. Problem gone on my Octo 2.8. Thank you to the engineers.
Hopefully someone will spill the beans as to what it was. All I could squeeze out last month was that it was Firmware. IMO it was Boot Camp related, regardless if you ran XP or ( close your eyes) Vista.
Anyway, "Raise the Broomstick Sailor." My 2.8 is now perfect.

Mar 28, 2008 10:58 AM in response to glideslopeby Scott Shupe1,I have a 10 day old 3.0 Dual Quad, it totally had the reboot from sleep problem, and the firmware update fixed it for me. I've done a bunch of tests.
Quick aside: I have a friend who was a SWITCHER, and he bought the iMac flat panel that had the freezing problem. I assured him "Apple absolutely *WILL NOT* screw you!". I told him if they couldn't fix it they would get him a new computer. A month or so later, Apple came out with a software update (to graphics) which completely fixed the problem.
The moral of that story is: THIS is really the upside of being an Apple customer. You have that deep trust that Apple will take care of you. So when i discovered the reboot/sleep problem, i remained calm... and Apple fixed it.
Thanks Apple !! -
Mar 28, 2008 11:06 AM in response to jdhayes117by shape, actually i used the software update for the firmware and it displayed a pop-up window after downloading, giving me instructions on how to install the firmware (holding down the power button till it flickers). after doing this and rebooting it displayed the correct, updated firmware version in the system profiler. -

Mar 28, 2008 11:56 AM in response to Otto Donkersby Sandylp,Such a pleasure to use the computer now. Along with the reboot from wake, a problem which we have been discussing for weeks, the system seems much more solid after the firmware update. It could be my imagination, but it seems to boot and wake quicker with a minimum of fan noise. -

I completely agree. I absolutely love my computer now - fast, quiet, stable and a joy to use. We got off to a rocky start, but we're getting along famously now! -
Mar 28, 2008 2:21 PM in response to transplant6by gary11,I just installed the update and things appear to be fine. I'm as happy as anyone but I'm not going to unsubscribe to this topic just yet. I remember that this problem took it's time to show up in the first place. I hope that from here on out the posts are nothing but acclaim and accolades for Apple, but I'm going to keep watch just the same. -
Mar 28, 2008 8:04 PM in response to gary11by lz,Hi sleepers!
Lost my xp/fusion drive for a moment after firmware update but got it back to normal after new start. No sleep problems for now! Thanks, Apple. I feel great about this machine (fingers crossed) and will now install my new final cut express software to enjoy it even more.

Mar 29, 2008 1:05 AM in response to lzby doublep,The updated firmware has solved the sleep issues for my early-2008 Mac Pro too. One point which may be interesting for some of you:
My boot drive was an older 150 Go Raptor drive (version LR0, which is, I believe, one of the first models). I had regular crashes and unresponsive applications after waking up from sleep.
I upgraded the boot drive to a new Samsung F1 model and cloned the drive.
Now, all my issues have been solved. -
Mar 29, 2008 8:47 AM in response to thaJackby thaJack,I installed the firmware update and a few wakes and it was fine. The real test was just now, after ~20 hours of sleep. It woke, but it did take it about 30 seconds to do so. Seems the longer it sleeps, the longer it takes to wake up.
No reboot, though. -
Mar 30, 2008 4:37 AM in response to transplant6by Froggy Grodkin,Like many above my Mac suffered from the various forms of sleeping sickness reported.
My research shows that Apple are well equipped to deal with such issues and despite an obvious upsurge in business, the hoards abandoning the MS XP and Vista, they would soon be on the case.
However I did not expect the following and so record here points which may prove useful to others.
I was very pleased to see positive action taking place in the form of updates, one very small injection served to regain sleep normality although only briefly, and finally the Firmware Upgrade to MP31.006C.B05.
The first attempt at installing the latter failed miserably even though there was an appearance of the usual ‘Installation Successful with white Tick in Green Circle at what should have been the conclusion of the process.
There was nil change to the Sleep situation so checks were made to ascertain what had happened.
Via Apple > About this Mac > More Info > System profiler > Hardware > Boot ROM Version: it was obvious that the Mac was still on B02.
A while later I again hit the +Mac Pro EFI Firmware Update.app+ and followed the directions once again.
This time further instructions appeared, which had not previously displayed, these required the user to follow a sequence involving Shutting Down the Mac and on Restarting to hold the Power Button in until specified occurrences.
This time the System Profiler confirmed that the Firmware Upgrade had taken place.
Imagine my feelings when this had absolutely no effect at on the Sleep, or should that be ‘lack of’ Sleep, situation.
Revisiting the Mac Help > Sleep > +If your mac won’t go to Sleep+, I checked all the possible causes which had been carried out several times previously.
The directives are not crystal clear, simply removing Check-marks reduces usability of the Mac. It took a little trial and error testing to arrive at what would work. i.e. permit Sleep, allow Sharing and Waking on Ethernet*.
My set up is now as follows:
System Preferences > Energy Saver > Sleep > Default Options [Computer = 10 mins; Display = 10 mins.]
System Preferences > Energy Saver > Options > All except Restart after Power Failure are Check-marked.
System Preferences > Sharing > File, Printer and Web Sharing are Check-marked.
*It was Recheck-marking this facility that regained the Sleep function in conjunction with the other settings.
Although not verified at the present Default Energy Saver settings, at two minutes for both settings, the Computer Sleep takes effect two minutes after the Display Sleep setting has taken effect. The Display sleeping after two minutes and the Computer after four minutes.
I would like to know if this is particular to my Mac or just a glitch?
IMHO it is reasonable to expect the actions to occur after the respective set times have elapsed.
The latter is not a major issue but it and the above report indicate that the whole experience may not be straightforward for everyone.
