Yeah add me to list of 'Shared' randomly disappearing from the finder sidebar. It's clearly bug as the terminal command 'killall finder' normally fixes the problem.

My Mac appears to pick up other Macs on my network perfectly it's the Windows machines which are the problem. I have never seen a Windows machine appears under Shared unless i manually mount it via smb:. Judging from all of the posts in regards to this issue i am clearly not the only one. I am convinced this issue is the result of a bug.

Transferred information from another Mac (and no there were no firmware hacks/OS mods) and I've got the same issue.

'killall Finder' works for me too.

Fix in the next update please!

I too have the problem of the Windows machines not showing up under Shared.

In contrast to most of the posts in this thread, I do not have a problem with the Shared disappearing. Shared is always there, and my Mac systems show up there. The Windows systems did at one time (XP SP2 and Vista SP1) but no longer do. This happened on both my Powerbook and my Mini, and I believe it happened at the same time on both of them (at least I didn't notice one working and the other not).

    Same here!

Also, my Macintosh HD disappears once or twice a week.

    Its killing me

Something really random going on here! I spent yesterday morning reading threads about this problem, reconfigured my Windows PC, checked router and DNS settings, edited Host file on my Mac and for the remainder of the afternoon had my 3 PC's and NAS appearing in the Finder Shared section.

Switched on the Mac this morning and they've all gone! And before you ask, yes my Windows PC were not switched off!

    I"ll say !

Last night for no apparent reason my share folder reappeared and I tried to click on the pc icon only to get the Can't connect message

Mine came back on my Powerbook and Mini a couple days ago. I have no idea what would have changed. I also got Leopard on a G4 450 and the Windows machines show up on it too.

Now, hopefully 10.5.3 doesn't break it.

When share disappears for me, I goto the Apple Menu > Recent Items, and look under the "Servers" section. Clicking on a recently used server usually brings it back to life and Share appears in my finder sidebar again.

Usually all the Macs on my network show up reliably under Share in the Finder, but quite often I have to use the work-around described above to reacquire a connection to Windows XP or Vista volumes. I suspect the default settings of the built in XP and Vista firewalls are the problem. When I get desperate, I just turn those firewalls off on the Windows machines until I get a the files I need transferred.

I've had the issue of shared computers not showing up in my finder window for a while and I finally got fed up and went about trying to fix it. First thing I noticed is when a finder window is needed by an application (to make a selection) the shared computers were visible.

I'm not sure how I came to this conclusion but I decided to remove two programs that I no longer used, Airfoil and AirFoile Speakers by Rogue Amoeba. Guess what, I can see my shared computers in the finder window!

This is in way proof that any of the Rogue Amoeba programs caused the problem but removing them may have fixed the problem.. for now. If you have any of these app's give it a try.

P.S. I still have Rogue Amoeba's SoundSource on my system and I love that app.

*Did a couple of reboots and shared computers are still in my finder window. Please post if this is in fact correcting the problem for you.*

On my end, all i have to do is *Relaunch Finder by pressing alt + CTRL click* and than relaunch finder. on finder icon in my Dock.

Other method is to relaunch finder from Force Quite window.

Viola the Shared section is back.

I think I've figured it out, at least on my end.

Its dependent on what Windows machines are on. Vista on by itself wasn't showing up in the sidebar on any of my Leopard Macs. But I recently introduced a Windows 2000 Professional machine acting as a file server for me (but not running Win 2k Server). If that 2k machine is on, then all my leopard Macs show ALL of my Windows machines in the sidebar.

Scratch that. That seemingly held true for about 2 weeks. Until right after I posted that last post. Since then I've not seen my 2000 machine or my Vista machine on the network. The only difference is that I've also taken an XP machine off the network (it goes into hibernation if I don't use it). So it may not just be the 2000 machine, maybe its the XP machine, or maybe both have to be on. But what I do know is the Vista machine will not show up in the sidebar if it is the only machine other than my Macs that is on the network.
