Q: MPEG-2 DVD burning on the Mac

I have about 9 movies I created on my old PC using 'Let's Edit' software by Canopus. I converted the final movies to MPEG-2 format. I was able to plays the movies on Windows Media player. Now that I;ve switched over to the MAC, I copied one of the movies to my desktop. When I tried to open the moveie, I got the message THE MOVIE COULD NOT BE OPENED. IT IS NOT A MOVIE FILE.

How in the heck did it recognize that it was a movie file....but could not open it because it was not a movie file?????

I was looking on the web and there is a program called MVK Converter for Mac. It indicates that it will convert MPEG-2 files to MPEG-1 for universal playback. I want to burn these movies to DVDs so that I can give copies to my daughters to play on their DVD players or computers.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You may be able to play back your MPEG2 movies on your Mac by buying a $20 program from Apple called "Quicktime MPEG2 Playback Component". This is available on the Apple website.

You can burn playable DVDs of your MPEG2 content by using a third party program called Toast 9.

If you want to edit your movies before burning, they must be converted into an editable format such as dv or mpeg4 or h.264 or AIC. This can be done in the free application "MPEG Streamclip" (but this solution also requires the Quicktime MPEG2 Playback Component mentioned above). (Several other applications will also do this including Visual Hub.)

Thanks. I was able to burn the DVDs with Toast. The Quicktime MPEG2 program didn't work and Quicktime pro was listed as having MPEG2 capabilities, but even with the MPEG playback component it didn't work.
