I have no idea how to get a message to apple, so hopefully this message will get to them. I did a google search and found no indication of anyone else reporting this. Either no one has noticed, or it is specific to me.

When Leopard came out a few Greek characters stopped being displayed which really bugs up a number of my apps that rely on the OS.

I have narrowed down the precise issue. The problem the Greek breathing mark over any vowel. The result is a blank space.
Furthermore - it is only in the regular faced Lucida Grande - if I highlight the word and choose Bold, the character will show up.

If anyone wants to test it out to make sure it is not just a problem specific to my computer - set up your greek polytonic keyboard in the OS. Then choose your Greek keyboard and hit the single quote ( ' )key and then the "A" key ( a ). This should give you no result (assuming you are using regular faced lucida grande). Same goes for the Rough breathing mark (shift>' then "A") Now if you highlight the invisible stuff you just typed and choose Bold or another font, the characters will show up.

As I said, this was not a problem in Tiger.

I can't seem to duplicate your problem with TextEdit. Photo below.

well, you seem to have answered my question - I will try a font cache clear to see if that fixes it. You have no idea how long this has been bugging me. Of course, if the font cache clean doesn't do the trick I'll be even more frustrated knowing it is my own problem

    Thanks

I spoke to soon Tom. I just did a total font cleanse with fontnuke and there was no change.

So I guess it is my issue - but man is it annoying. It affects almost every program I use! And I use Greek a lot!

If anyone has any suggestions, I'm open.

Is there any app it does not happen with?

You might try setting up a new user account and see whether it occurs when you are logged into that.

Are there other fonts or other keyboard layouts you can use for your particular purposes? There are some sources here:

PS By the way, what are you producing? By chance I picked up a copy of the Loeb Arrian Vol II the other day and am seeing what I can decipher of Indica (my Greek was learned long ago and poorly).

I don't really every use lucida grande when I get to choose the font. Gentium is my greek font of choice, but time and helvetica display Greek nicely too. I can't see that a different unicode Greek keyboard would make a difference as another font shows it correctly.

The main issue for me is that so many places default to the system font for Greek and other characters. For example — every find and replace dialogue that I use (numbers, DEVONthink Pro, Keynote, Mellel, Pages) defaults to Lucida grande - so breathing marked characters don't show. I've been wanting to purchase iFlash (flashcard program) but it uses the system default font so I can't make Greek flashcards with it.

Do you by chance have a copy of the font Lucida Grande.ttf added to your system? It does crazy things, though I have not heard of anything like this before. The Apple font is different, Lucida Grande.dfont.

I may have found the problem but then created another! For some unknown reason, I had the Tiger version of Font Book in my documents folder, and the leopard version in my apps folder. I use appdelete to delete programs, so I used it to delete the old version of fontbook. But appDelete grabbed them both, which I didn't notice until after I emptied my trash!

So now I don't have font book, which is annoying, and I can't seem to find the program on the net for download anywhere.

I tried to type in textedit and the problem persists, but perhaps after getting rid of the old fontbook I need to renuke my fonts?

You can't download pieces of OS X from the net. You can reinstall the OS completely or try using Pacifist to reinstall the bits you need from your install disks.
