The Stereo Sum of a small or the LCR Sum of a large Stage provides the best sound quality, especially if you want to exploit the material for a Live DVD. Don't forget one or two good audience mics.
But if you only need the sound coming from the stage (with the "noice" of the audience) then an stereo shotgun is a good mic for this. Rode is free of doubt but Audio technica has got great mics too (BP4029 or the BP4027 for a little bit more bass).Mac OS X (10.5.2)
