Q: What are Safe Preferences?

I'm assuming the Safe Preferences folder in the User Library contains preferences for Safe Mode, but I've yet find any information confirming this assumption. Does anyone know the function of the Safe Preference folder?

Tiger generates Safe Preferences when it detects corrupted normal preferences.

During testing of pre-release versions I did have this happen a couple of times - the OS will pop up a dialogue box saying something along the lines of " New preferences have been created for <application>, do you want to use these now?". Ordinarily you will find that the originals are fine and can be used, however, you must delete the safe pref or the OS will keep asking you if you want to use it.

Thanks. That answers a few questions for me. Makes sense now that there's just a random short list of prefs in that folder and none in its ByHost folder.
