Is there a way to speed up your dial-up connection? I moved to an area that has no cable or DSL, so I am back to dial-up

Is there a program that works with the Mac that will increase my speed from 44k to say around 100k or so? I have SBC phone service.

    By a second (and maybe third) phone line and multiplex at the network layer.

    Seriously, think about what you're asking: if the wire can move data at a rate of up to 44k/sec, there's no way you can push or pull "faster" through that wire. You can get some gains by making sure that compression is enabled: the data is compressed by the sender before sending and expanded by the receiver after receiving, so the wire data speed is unchanged but the overall data throughput is higher.

    Did you look into direct tv internet. I think direct tv offers internet service.

    You don't have DSL?

    Of course you can get DSL because it uses the phone lines (something like Earthlink that sends you a DSL modem and instructions, dial up number via mail). But what you don't have is a local access number, so everytime your online it's a long distance phone call. But you can use a discount phone service or a pre-number (like 10-10-636) in your Network settings in front of your access number to get a cheaper rate (like a nickel a minute)

    With this set up you can use broadband when you need it and 56k when you don't. Just setup two "Locations" in Network and switch between the two.

    Some 56k services have their own "accelerator" which is a hassle to use, but works somewhat. A lot don't have it for Mac's, so find a Mac friendly 56k ISP and of course a local dial up number.

    If you have big bucks there is a satelight option, portable too.

    Yes there is a software call onspeed;
    www.onspeed.com, i have it at my cabin, in the mountains,
    it does works but you will lose image quality;
    the gain in speed though is incredible

    Hi Thanks for the reply. I have SBC as my telephone company. I am "outside" of the DSL limit. So I am stuck using Dial-up if I want to keep my e-Mail address. So yes, I should have DSL, but no I don't. Not yet anyway. They tell me "some time soon." That could be any day now, or after the next Ice Age, which is more cost effective to SBC.
