Hi,

I've never had iChat work for me. Each time I try to logon to my account using my googlemail it comes up with the following error message:

"Could not connect to Jabber... Could not connect to host talk.l.google.com"

I'm operating in a university via the ethernet, so there's a limit to what I can adjust, but any advice would be wonderful. Everything seems up to date and the OS and computer are new, and iChat is ostensibly connected via the defaults (server: talk.google.com and port: 5223).

Cheers,
Herbert

Dunno if this helps or works, but here's a link I found in another thread regarding Google & iChat... good luck!

Is anyone else at the location you are at using Googletalk successfully ?
(seeing that you have the iChat's Google side set up as those Instructions)

It may well be blocked centrally by the university.

It can be a serious drain on their network if all the students are using IM apps and more so if some of those are doing video chats.

On your Google Mail page you can chat you your Buddies (Text only)

    Google Mail Chat

IPNetMonitorX can be used to Scan the Port(s) an Application uses to see it is getting anywhere. It comes as a trial which will work for a bit.

Give this link to you Buddy http://myip.dk/
Ask them to tell you their Public IP and test the 5223 port on TCP to that IP.
If that does not work try the IP for GoogleTalk (Use the Server name in the Network Utility in Applications/Utilities in Who is).
And finally if that produces no response try the IP you are getting from the Uni or their Router/Gateway IP

You will know if you get a response very Clearly, but failures are listed in small letters in the bottom part of the window 's edge.
