Q: FCP Project Files are all "invalid format?"

I tried uploading many FCP Project Files with no success. All Project Files run fine in Final Cut Pro.

Once the upload process begins, the "Jobs in Progress" status spins for about a minute or so. At this point a red exclamation point appears, then a popup window that states:

"Unable to Analyze Project ... Invalid Format."

The project file makes it's way into FC Server as a listed asset, however when I choose to "get Info" and do a Search for the associated project files, nothing shows up. The manual mentions or recommends to use file extensions, and I have.

I read Final Cut Server is supposed to automatically recognize all FCP Project file's associated media. In fact they don't need to be packaged in a folder, etc.

Lastly I created a brand new FCP Project with a single video clip and a single audio clip after I installed the new ProApps Update. Still no luck.

Is anyone experiencing the same issue?

Thanks.

    Hi Paul,

I have the same problem as you have. Updated all programs to the latest versions, reinstalled finalcut server, and I still have the same error "Unable to analyse project - invalid format"
My FCP version is 6.0.3 and the server version is 1.0

And the XML work around works only its not a really convenient option. Because when you open the XML you have to save it as .fcp, work with and then export it back to an xml and finaly upload it back into the server.. There's a lot of room for errors..

I hope there will be a solution soon, because this should be a verry basic feature!?

I noticed that when the admin user who installed fcp server is logged in I don't get the invalid format error. So if you have installed fcp server on one system and you also want to use that system as a client station, you may run into this problem. If you connect to the server system (logged in as admin) via fiber or gbit, it works fine. Or you can test it on one system but you have to be logged in as admin.

Unbelievable. The update does not fix the problem.

I continue to receive this message when I attempt to pull in FCP project files.

Yes the server is running, yes I'm logged in as admin ... etc, etc ...

Just to be sure, double check that your project has .fcp at the end. I've had no problems so far as long as my sequence had that extension at the end.

    Thanks.

I was aware of this from the very beginning. All project files have the proper extension.

    Still no luck.

Here's something I found over the weekend. Look in the logs (i.e /Library/Logs/Final Cut Server/fcsvr_*.log) for 'msgId FAILED'. (BTW, that is a capital i not an L - as in message ID.)
Those appear to be error messages from whatever is analyzing the FCP file. But the message doesn't always percolate up to the GUI.

    Hi,

I'm still having that problem but not all the time. I'm running FCSvr in a test environment installed on a Mac Pro with Mac OS X 10.5.3 Server installed. I'm using local users with network access to the server (with local DNS) and I'm using a MacBook with only the client installed for real network testing. After the update to V1.1 the problem isn't gone. I've had installed some third party QT-components on the server system. I've removed them from the system with the uninstall application provide from the developers of the components.

Here is what I've been testing so far:

Mac Pro (the one FCSvr is running on), local admin account, client log in with the installation admin account -> works
MacBook (the one with client only), local admin account, client log in with the installation admin account -> works

Mac Pro, local admin account, client log in with standard user with privileges of editor-group -> works
MacBook, local admin account, client log in with standard user with privileges of editor-group -> works

MacBook, local standard user, client log in with standard user with privileges of editor-group -> works
MacBook, local standard user, client log in with the installation admin account -> works

Mac Pro, local standard user, client log in with standard user with privileges of editor-group -> invalid project
Mac Pro, local standard user, client log in with the installation admin account -> invalid project

Mac Pro, local admin account (just created), client log in with admin just created -> invalid project
Mac Pro, local admin account (just created), client log in with standard user with privileges of editor-group -> invalid project
Mac Pro, local admin account (just created), client log in with the installation admin account -> invalid project

MacBook, local admin account, client log in with admin just created -> works
MacBook, local standard user, client log in with admin just created -> work

Now I know that I've problems with the local accounts on the mac pro that aren't the initializing admin account. But, what the heck could it be? Also new generate account will fail to upload the project file.

Hope the above listing will help somebody do get an idear what this might be.

After Luuk M's post I did some testing in my environment.

You must have the user who installed FCSVR server software logged in on the FCSVR server machine.

If no one is logged in, or someone else is logged in, or you are fast user switched to another user then no client will be able to upload FCP projects.

    Thanks andiron,

This was previously discussed. Unfortunatly it does not solve the problem.

    Paul,

My previous response was to CKausch.

Have you looked for 'msgId FAILED' in the logs, as I mentioned a while back in this thread?

    Did that turn up anything?

    Hi all:

I had the same problem, even after the FCSrv 1.1 upgrade, so I went back to the problem FCP project and made a copy of the original media + project through Media Manager. The problem project is uploading right now without any of the invalid format errors.

    Hope this helps.

    Harley,

    Still no luck.

    Let me just reiterate:

I run the entire group of apple pro-apps, logic pro, telestream episode pro, bias peak pro 6 XT, and many plugins.

    Also, Xcode, interface builder, etc.

I have no problem with any other application. My system runs trouble free and I have no stability issues whatsoever.

So, I'm still trying to figure this out ...
