so i've been reading a lot of horror stories about upgrading the software on the original iphone and mine's a little different.

it took 6 tries to get past the "backing up data" window. finally i see that it's extracting data and all that jazz and then, as i think its finally booting back up to be usable i get an error that says something like "syncing has encountered an error and cannot finish".

so now my computer doesn't recognize my phone and my phone is in a constant loop of two screens: an apple usb cable with an arrow to the itunes logo and the start up screen of just the silver apple logo.

what in the **** is going on here and how do i get my phone working again? please help, someone...anyone...

I doubt it will make you feel better but mine is doing the same thing. I gave up on fixing it. I'll try the apple store later I guess.

I had issues with the update as well. I had to reinstall iTunes and then uninstall and reinstall Quicktime. Once I did that I connected the phone again and it took f o r e v e r to finally finish.

The best thing I can tell you is to take the SIM card out, put it in a different phone and call apple. I had that happen a while back ago when trying to do an restore on my phone, and it did get fixed. Don't give up! When all is said and done, your data is still on your computer and once your phone is back up and working you will be able to sync it with the old data on your computer!

Mine cycled between these two screens a few times during my upgrade to 2.0 -- which was eventually successful. I also had the "emergency call" screen a couple of times.

My solution was to leave it plugged in and pour a glass of wine, sip it and wait for the busy servers (this was Friday) to do their magic. Fortunately the update finished before the wine finished me!

    Hi there,

The same thing happened to my iPhone and it was locked. When I called Apple basically they said my phone was useless because the phone was designed to handle the new 2.0 upgrade. My phone had the same screen with the usb cable directing my to go to iTunes. I tried everything until I researched something about "virginizing" my iPhone. I paid 20.00 for a program to unlock my phone and it worked. Only now I'm still not getting any signal which is the next step into fixing my phone.

    Hope this helps,

My iPhone stopped getting signal last night. No reason (well, there must be one but I don't know why yet). I suspect 2.0 was the cause.

My husband's iPhone was still getting reception where I got none. So...my message is don't wait for long before going to the Apple store and returning it. My reception never came back to what it was. In full strength areas, I was only gettng 2 bars.

I am sorry to hear that all of you are having problems with the upgrade.

I must have been lucky my phone updated fine. However I have a reception problem.

I can make a call from the front yard but not in my house.

Is anyone having this issue, if so is it the phone or AT&T's towers.

To anyone with an unlocked phone and another carrier, is your reception any good?
