This thread is a continuation of [Strange vertical stripes|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1423301], which has been locked. The thread was too long and some browsers were timing out. The above link goes back to the original thread.

Thank you.

I'm not normally a fan of "me too" messages, but this thread's low reply count (due to the original thread being locked by the moderators) would seem to imply that the vertical stripes problem is less of an issue than it seems, and I'd like to fix that.

So... it's still happening to me too, more than 4+ months after it was officially reported (with no word from Apple). If you're having the problem, I encourage you to post here too so that this thread stays in a place where it gets noticed.

I will also take advantage of my new "top of the thread" position to recap some of the issues and solutions:

This picture describes the problem that we are all discussing:

    http://img175.imageshack.us/my.php?image=mg2729smallnx2.jpg

If you have a different display problem, please do not post about it here (but feel free to start another thread in the forum!).

When this problem occurs, you can press Ctrl-Shift-Eject and then move the mouse (or whatever) to restore your screen. This will generally fix the problem with the strips until the next time it occurs.

Also, here are gamlidek's instructions (from the previous thread) for how to reproduce the problem with some level of reliability:

    ====

    One more try:

    1) Unplug MBP. *
    2) Set brightness to max, then dim it by 6 boxes.
    3) Run photo booth and start taking pictures.

Also, more info on the tests I did.

Two of the 4MBPs took over 15 pictures to reproduce. 1 reproduced in 5 pics, the last one reproduced in 2 pictures. So, it may take more than 5 pictures to reproduce.

    ====

Some posters have also indicated that the problem is correlated with having the display backlight set to <6 boxes from max when putting the display to sleep. Please search the old thread for details (<a class="jive-link-external-small" href="http://">http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1423301&tstart =0).

This is a big news story waiting to happen, and not a favourable one. Extremely disappointing.

Regarding the 'helpful' article that was posted regarding the 'fix' to the problem, well that just made my blood boil. It was as helpful as telling me to restart my lemon of a computer every time it crashes. Hardly a fix to 'shiftcontroleject' is it? A highly insulting article.

Some official responsibility taken by Apple for their fault in this case is long overdue.

    Brett,

Can you please provide any possible explanation as to why the view count on the former thread was lowered from 60,000 views to 1500?

    much thanks,

    Hi everyone,

I still have the stripes issue. And altough it happens only occasionally, I want it addressed by Apple. As far as I can tell, it seems that Apple is making "damage control". i beleive that they are only going to address the problem when and if the solution is cheaper than paying everyone that asks a new display. And as far as we can tell, the display in NOT the problem. So the problem may be even bigger and we can all be in a big risk of having bigger problems in a near future. So, if you can afford the time without your MBP, HAVE YOUR MBP SERVICED!

honestly. This really ****** me off! I saw the old post months ago before I bought my MBP. I decided to take the risk and get the "glossy" screen model, hoping it might be the difference. Just a few hours ago, low and behold!!

    C'mon Apple, this is rubbish!!!

    What's the story???

Count me in too. Has happened half a dozen times in the ALMOST 2 weeks since I received it.
Unfortunately, I have just discovered that the DOA return policy in NZ is 10 days after invoice date, not 2 weeks. The MBP came from Apple AU Online Store over a weekend (lose 3 days there) AND I have been away for a week of that

Plus I also have the slightly buzzy noisy right fan, which started happening after about 4 hours of use.

    Okay, here goes:

    "me too!"

I haven't tried to reproduce the issue, but i've seen it happen every now and then. Not something I would expect from a 1k8 € computer - feeling a bit disappointed, to be honest.

    Cheers,

    Fred

So has anyone tried servicing and resolving this issue? I want to know whether servicing actually helps.

If you can find my earlier posts on the earlier thread you will see that I have consulted my local Apple Centre (Kingston upon Thames UK) about this problem.
My machine is still under warranty so Applecare did not need to be invoked.
The Apple Geniuses (genii ?) were helpful and after my first visit replaced the Logic Board and the Display clamshell.

Days later my screen died entirely and I went back and they very quickly (two days) fixed it again by replacing the Logic board (again). They put it down to a faulty Logic Board.

By now the service costs, which I happily don't have to pay, had amounted to about £1530 GBP !!

Great! No sign of any further stripes but a couple of days later my computer died completely - no wake chimes -- nada !
Back to the Apple Centre where once again the guys were great - and very very apologetic.
This time they simply replaced the whole machine.

A good result I think, despite the inconvenience of re-instating all my work. Fortunately I had a recent TimeMachine backup to work from so I lost very little.

So far no sign of the dreaded stripes and the machine seems to be working just fine.
Rest assured I will be back on the forum if I see any sign of them re-appearing.

As I have said before: Apple HQ should take a leaf out of the book of their Kingston Centre - exemplary service and they were always there for me.

I haven't read the whole of the old thread (who has the time ?) but would be interested to know if Apple head office has acknowledged this problem yet and come up with any definitive solutions. If all the problems are solved in the way that mine has it coould end up costing them millions.

Have you tried to replicate the problem by following the steps above?
    i.e.,
    1) Unplug MBP. *
    2) Set brightness to max, then dim it by 6 boxes.
    3) Run photo booth and start taking pictures.
