All of a sudden Mac Mail won't send mail from my .mac account through it's mail server even though the MobileMe sends mail just fine.

Anyone know what may be up?

I hate using the mobile me mail.

G5, Mac OS X (10.4.6), 2gb RAM

Do you get an error message? If so, what does it say exactly? What are the Incoming and Outgoing mail server settings you're using?

And if you're running 10.4.6 as your profile states, you can't possibly be using MobileMe. If it's not correct, you should update that.

I just started having the same problem, right after the latest security update. I receive mail just fine, but I can't send mail - I get a time out on the smtp server port (25). As I said, this just started this evening, right after installing the latest software update.

Have you tried changing your Outgoing mail server to Port 587? Your ISP may have decided to block the normal Port 25.

Okay, I did two things to fix this:

    1. Changed the name of the outgoing mail server to smtp.me.com (rather than smtp.mac.com)

    2. Changed the port from 25 to 587.

Why port 25 would suddenly stop working is beyond me, but hey, things are back to normal.

Thanks - had same problem and this worked for me also. Why do they change things w/o telling us?

I had the same problem and have made the suggested changes. Worked for me.

Thanks for the postings - I had the same problem and changed the port and now it works fine. I just looked at the online status for my support question - my 40 minute wait shows I have another 45 minutes to go... this saved me much time.

That worked for me too, so thanks.

I guess it's too much to ask of Apple, after telling us that our .Mac accounts would continue to work as they always had to send an email to it's members saying that it WOULDN'T work as always and that you have to change your settings in mail.

This whole MobileMe thing has been a disaster - and all for something that isn't really all that big of a move forward - especially since it requires two steps back.

    Thanks for the info.

    EXCELLENT question

I experienced the same problem--unable to SEND mail using MobileMe server. Changed to port 587, now seems to work (cross fingers).

I also noticed that I cannot change the incoming mail server name from "mail.mac.com" to "mail.me.com." When I try to change then save, it reverts to "mail.mac.com."

By the way, under the "Advanced" menu, can anyone explain "IMAP Path Prefix"? It's blank by default, I gather. Why might someone use a prefix here? Also the default port is 143 and the "Use SSL" block is unchecked.

    Merely curious.

That's to be expected, since you have a mac.com address, not a me.com address; the server names for mac.com accounts have not changed.

But how do you change ports? When I go to MAIL --> PREFERENCES --> ADVANCED
the port number is dimmed and not subject to change.

Never mind. I figured it out.
