Q: vertical lines - there for sure

I want to share my success of getting iMac, that was demoed for a while, before I became user and warranty time started ticking for me. Initially unhappy to discover, that unit was on display at some computer shop (via traces of activities), I am now extremely happy to be found in position to be covered by 12 months warranty, once famous vertical lines issue is there, as it should (same unfortunate serial number). Only weeks were left for this joy to happen.

On the other hand, I am posting this to encourage Apple looking at the essence of problem, and stop playing unaware - when the rest of the world knows issue very well, it would be surprising, that otherwise great company would behave like it does now. If we, Apple users, are goodwilled to slightly overpay for our gadgets, surely we do this with trust in Apple as decent manufacturer of reliable equipment. If manufacturing turns out to have defects (having that for particular serie is sure sign), we, users, and Apple are finding ourselves at crossroads: either our favorite company does right thing to protect our expectations, or we no longer expect equipment to be reliable, we though it should be.

If my PC screens are more robust, than those in Mac, and if there is nobody to stand on our side in such discoveries - well, you got idea.

Personally, I am happy to have warranty, as described. But it is only luck. One cannot expect be lucky all the time.

Apple, please address issue as needed, I want to be able buying your next product.

Update: next day, next line. Now they are both blue, location is close to that of yesterdays. Good thing here, too, is that first repair will be reopened, as not solving issue completely. Going to send unit back coming week.

Glad to hear things moved on, as it seems now. Still wondering what the cause will be dug for this complicated faliure. Staying tuned.

You may find it interresting to note. In talking to Level 2 support myself I was told that posting in this 'support forum' is NOT the way to get Apple's attention. What he suggested was to get everyone and anyone you know that has an interest in the problem to Post to APPLE Feedback... you know apple.com/feedback.

He said that changes in the OSX have been largely driven by customer complaints/suggestions in feedback. He noted that if 10 - 20 thousand reports show up that Apple is probably going to make a change...!

Just wanted to add to forum - we purchased a 17" Intel Core DUo 2GHz Imac last year for my parents who are in their 80's. They have loved it.
We have four other Macs in the family - two imacs and two laptops.
Sadly, there are now three vertical lines on ithe 17", and it has recently come out of the warranty. Yes - up to $1000 plus GST to replace the screen.

We are in Christchurch, New Zealand.
    Purchased it Dec 14th 2006. W8641 range.
I intend to call Apple for further discussion.
Very disappointed. Thank you for the information on here - it is helpful to decide what to do next. Here's hoping for an answer.

My vertical lines started showing up about 8 weeks ago and I am only up to 4 but worrying about how fast more of these lines will show up!
Of course my warranty is over and so is my Applecare Plan.
As a teacher we have hundreds of apple machines in our school and I prefer to use my laptop over my PC desktop machine all the time. but I would expect Apple to stand behind their products. I NEVER have unsupported problems with the PC components. I guess this is just the way Apple works! I will have a hard time purchasing Apple technology in the future.

Update: another day, and there are two more lines. Now more distributed both in placement, and in color: those are purple and yellow.

Once again - this is development of lines within days after iMac got back from service with replaced LCD, after which things LOOKED fixed. That is very important to bear in mind, as damaged LCD looks as only derivative of some component, that developed failure. I would guess inverter, even though am not so intimately familiar with the innards of particular case, so it can be something else, perhaps. THEREFORE SPENDING $1000+ ON REPLACING LCD BY USER DOES NOT EVEN MAKE SENSE, UNTIL ISSUE IS BETTER RESEARCHED OR EVEN ADDRESSED BY APPLE. Please use mentioned here around feedback, please speak with your Apple representatives for that to happen.

Anyway, will try to keep updated, as problem looks bit more hidden and complicated, than usual. If anybody more familiar with that hardware could throw ideas or knowledge of what could be failing in all those cases - please do not hesitate to share. I believe, there are quite some users or even repair outlets, awaiting resolution of problem.

my iMac is the 3rd generation Intel 17" ,bought Jul06 with one year warranty. The first yellow one pixel vertical line appeared on the LCD screen 3 days ago and the purple/pink line appeared the other day.

I called the local Hong Kong apple support hotline and told them what I read on apple forum of a Singaporean user who has the same problem can get his 3rd generation iMac fixed for free. All they did was throwing me between technical support in Hong Kong(not directly speaks for apple) and Customer Relation hotline. The battle was long, I made about 7-8 calls, no mention how long I had waited. One of the lady on the phone even asked me to call Singapore apple support instead. And one said I shouldn't believe what ppl said in the forum.

Dear Fiona - please beware, that putting new LCD panel (screen itself) into device was NO SOLUTION YET in my case, and reported other, as brand new LCD started showing lines within first week of getting home. Therefore, I would suggest providing Apple representatives with the information accumulated so far: it is common for certain serie of product to fail at more-less same time, and it is common mistake of replacing LCD trough repair, while faulty component might be some other, causing soon death of LCD in the end - no matter old or new.

Therefore, some time, given to Apple certified repair outlets (if not Apple itself), can lead to quality repair, instead of going trough the same killing-another-LCD routine, that seems to take place right now.

Being a loyal Apple customer since the '90s, my personal opinion is that this issue is neither an isolated incident nor a user induced failure...just a faulty part fabrication issue and thus should issue a recall.

I don't know how much of a help this can be, but I've signed up myself. (It seems I cannot post a link, so Google for (sorry, not much help because they won't let me post with certain, words, links, etc. but there is a place online where you can join forces).

I sincerely expect Apple to live up to its own expectations.

    Line Fixed!
Not sure who I'm replying to..... my iMac got a line last week. I took it to the Genious Bar here in San Francisco, and it was fixed in 10 days. Free, because I still am under 3 year Apple Plan.
I have to say, some of the posts in these Forums are simply not true, so be careful w/ info.

What are you basing your "truthiness" comment on? Glad you got it fixed with Applecare. Care to share what the problem was or do you even know what they did with it for 10 days?

If you don't have the extended warranty Apple will charge you to fix this problem.

Did they install a new LCD panel on your iMac?

    Wow!

Excellent! I have a 17" intel imac serial no W860 and I have vertical lines too. Spoke to apple about it and they basically tried to sell me a new machine - not a lot of help. Reading this though it seems they are perhaps now more aware of the problem and its worth my talking to them again.

    Hi

I was swift to complain so I'll be swift to praise! Just got off the phone from Apple and they have given a warranty extension to sort out the screen. It goes in on Friday to be fixed!

    Thank You Apple!!!
