Q: vertical lines - there for sure

I want to share my success of getting iMac, that was demoed for a while, before I became user and warranty time started ticking for me. Initially unhappy to discover, that unit was on display at some computer shop (via traces of activities), I am now extremely happy to be found in position to be covered by 12 months warranty, once famous vertical lines issue is there, as it should (same unfortunate serial number). Only weeks were left for this joy to happen.

On the other hand, I am posting this to encourage Apple looking at the essence of problem, and stop playing unaware - when the rest of the world knows issue very well, it would be surprising, that otherwise great company would behave like it does now. If we, Apple users, are goodwilled to slightly overpay for our gadgets, surely we do this with trust in Apple as decent manufacturer of reliable equipment. If manufacturing turns out to have defects (having that for particular serie is sure sign), we, users, and Apple are finding ourselves at crossroads: either our favorite company does right thing to protect our expectations, or we no longer expect equipment to be reliable, we though it should be.

If my PC screens are more robust, than those in Mac, and if there is nobody to stand on our side in such discoveries - well, you got idea.

Personally, I am happy to have warranty, as described. But it is only luck. One cannot expect be lucky all the time.

Apple, please address issue as needed, I want to be able buying your next product.

    Hi

I was swift to complain so I'll be swift to praise! Just got off the phone from Apple and they have given a warranty extension to sort out the screen. It goes in on Friday to be fixed!

    Thank You Apple!!!

    What do you mean:

1.- A warranty extension for ALL world wide users (more than 2000 by now)? ...or
2.- A warranty extension just for you?

Update: iMac is back home for the second time. Looks fine, of course. But more interesting are details, obtained from repair specialist, as below.

    1. Good to know, that there is policy of giving 3 months warranty for replacement part. Thus, failed LCDs could be exchanged indefinitely, if failing within 3 months. Not bad for some firmer ground to proceed.

    2. Repairer has noticed one, probably important, detail about my case: sometimes spare parts, received by them, are not necessary new. Therefore, replacement screen CAN be from the same unfortunate batch, that is developing failure over time, and unnoticeable at the time, it is put during repair. That could be quite an explanation for what happened. This second time panel arrived manufactured somewhere else, and likely new - could fix problem with first attempt to repair.

    3. Speaking with other experienced colleagues, repair guy heard, that most likely failure is contained within LCD part itself, it is unbelieved, that invertor or other related component could cause what is observed.

So, there is one theory at hand now. If someone else has important experience with issue - let us know, there is plenty of those, interested in exact details.

I presented an Imac 17" to my son studying at IIT Kanpur about a year and half back. Thought that it would last for another two years, till he completes his course there. It has developed the by now 'famous' vertical line near the left edge. Has Apple taken any step to redress this often encountered problem after the warranty is over?

Unfortunately, there still appears to be arranged no program for extending warranty of affected product serie for the well-known-now defect. Still, as seen here, much depends on goodwill of your particular Apple representatives and your effort of proving the situation to be what it is.

I remain seriously surprised, how sensitive is reaction to wording in those forums, as opposed to missing reaction over issues of real concern to company and its customers.

    *Hello, I'm a Mac*
and I got my first ugly thin yellow line on my face yesterday...
It looks like a common issue for W8XXX iMac, and PC will make fun of me. :-(

Hi lenn, I gave my kids the 17" imac (beautiful white one) , as with the screen it was no longer trustworthy. It went from 1 line April 2007 (1 and a half months after the warranty expired) to 8 lines January 2008 which is when I bought the new imac, with Applecare. The old 17" now has at least 18 lines and growing. Thank god they only play games on it and don't mind the visual garbage. Apple owes us an apology and rebate.
