I haven't seen any posts on this so maybe its just mine, but since all the latest updates my touch seems to be a lot slower. Slower cycling between apps, slower typing like when i am on the third letter of a word the first is just popping up, and occasional crashing of safari and other apps. Also on maps when i try to do locate myself it just sits there thinking and never pinpoints a location like it used to. I thought that the theory behind updates was to make things better. Thanks to anyone that has some info on these items.

I'm having the same problems. Several of my apps. crash (I load them, screen goes black for about 2 seconds then it returns back to the main screen), my contacts list is very slow and general speed of the Touch has slowed somewhat. I've deleted and reloaded the six or seven apps that I am having problems with, but they still don't respond. Not sure what to do.

same problems here. Safari more then anything appears to be quite unstable for me. Typing is very laggy, and it crashes frequently. Normal functions have slowed as well. Basic stuff like going from an APPLE app to the homescreen to another APPLE app is often accompanied by very noticeable lag, and the screen transitions aren't smooth. Instead of the nice dissolve, it just goes sraight to black before the new screen is loaded.

Is 2.1 just that buggy? Is the first gen iPod touch hardware undersized? Does the device need reset to free memory?

Apple I hope you are watching and have answers because this is turning into a lousy user experience.
