    I too am experiencing this. I have never had a problem with my Razr V3i. Seldom did I drop calls.

    It's getting to the point where I can't even make a call because I have no signal.

    I hope ATT and or Apple come up with something to fix this. All the mess with waiting for the phone and going through the activation, signing a contract that costs more than what i was paying for not to mention all the fees that come with upgrading and all the hype. . . and it doesn't even work great as a phone..

    Ran the Wired test again, this time with the Field Test :

    time = between 00:30 & 00:45 BST (UK) :

    version 2.0.1 ...
    serial no.88829xxxxxx ...
    model MB489B ...
    modem 01.48.02

    iPhone 3G on O2

    held with two fingers => 3 bars, which seems to equal about -85 to -95dbm
    2 bars, which seems to be about -100dbm
    'phone in-hand => 1 bar, which seems to be around -105dbm

    anyway, in the house, on the table by the iMac, about a metre from the window, gave a fairly steady 3 bars of 3G, which gave (repeatedly, within about 20Kbps):

    download 1.66Mbps / 1663Kbps = over eight times better than Edge (Wired said)
    upload 0.24Mbps / 236Kbps = well over five times better than Edge (Wired said)

    and I think the network is capable of up to a little over twice that - if I understand correctly

    I miss my old iphone. I've had the 3G for less than a week and reception is crap where I had great reception on my old phone. Went back to factory settings today and now it won't load music from itunes. To top it off, when I'm on a call without a head set, the screen doesn't turn off so I'm constantly calling other numbers, muting the phone or dialing random numbers with my cheek. Did I say I miss my old phone. We'll see if the appt with the Genius squad (who thought of that?) tomorrow helps.

    I did a few test with my black berry I still have with verizon..

    it's the top of the line blackberry world phone they have ...

    well the iphone holds better signal strength

    plus when on 3g I can constantly hit lonleyplanet.com in 20 sec or under.. that seems to be the testing they did .....

    as far as the wired test.. I did that one plus one I got set up on one of my servers thats located in san fran.. I seem to be doing between 400-600kbps consistently is that good or bad?

    I wanted to clarify my previous post where I mentioned having reception problems prior to upgrading my original iPhone to the 3G model. I had an original iPhone and a Blackberry Curve and noticed a definite uptick in reception issues sometime between May and June. However, not on the scale that I have now with the 3G iPhone.

    I come from a wireless background, albeit another carrier and while it's been a few years one thing is for certain - towers can only hold so many users at once. Back in the days before data was mainstream and the primary cargo on a tower was voice, one could measure capacity more in terms of users than kb's. Nowadays, especially with the introduction of the iPhone and 'all you can eat' data plans it isn't so simple. So that's why I just have to wonder, knowing I was already experiencing some degradation pre-iPhone 3G, if AT&T has the capacity in their network to handle the iPhone masses. Sure, there may be chip/firmware issues for Apple to deal with, but let's not lose sight of the possibility there is some shouldering of blame on AT&T's side here as well.

    I've posted before that I switched out the sim card and it helped signal strength some, but it turns out, it didn't seem to help that more than half my calls today were dropped, even with 3 bars. I do not have 3g in my area (yet) Is anyone have the same issue with edge network also? I see a lot about the 3G, but edge failing anyone? (I turned my 3G off, but still most calls are lost 30 seconds in.) Thanks

    Guys, go in to exchange your phones.

    I'm not saying you'll get a better one. But still, it puts a returned phone in their stockroom with a note saying "returned for poor 3G reception". Let them pile up!

    Also, it resets your 30-day return period so you can wait for a fix without risking your $.

    The dropped calls are not problems with ATT&T but with the iphone. Being in Hong Kong where 3G phones and networks been around for 6 years. I had previous models of other 3G phones which don't have these problems. I only experience these problems when the network was new 6 years ago!! Many users in HK experiencing the same problem. I know 10 friends that have the same issues! It's not the US but all iphone3G users worldwide!!

    We need a fix!

    My two cents.

    I live in an area of FL that is known for having lousy AT&T service. On the map I am at the fringe of coverage. I got a new iPhone mostly to use on the road. And I got two more for the other family members. I was not surprised to see only one tiny bar in my house and maybe two outside. But I get great calls and none have been dropped. Is it possible that dropped calls are in part a function of congestion on the network. There isn't an Apple Store within an hour of me. And most people around here use PTT phones.

    Is this true? I haven't looked into this in much detail but did a quick google search about exchanging the iphone and resetting the 30 day return period.

    Can anyone else confirm this? If so, not a bad idea. Also, do you have to book an appointment or can you just walk into the store to exchange? Thanks.

    I hate to tell ya, but I have an "old" (ca. Feb 2008) iPhone, and around the time of the release for the 3G, I started having all kinds of problems with my connection. Calls were dropped all the time, and my phone would skip between 1 bar and 5.

    I've been wondering if this was a result of the added load of all the new 3G customers, or if AT&T made some sort of change to their network around that time, or if it was my own upgrade to firmware 2.0. (The 2.0.1 firmware hasn't fixed it.) At the same time, my phone started getting hung all the time, taking 5-20 seconds to register routine inputs on the screen.

    I took my phone to the Apple store and they exchanged it, although they said that if it persists (as it has) I should go to AT&T to swap my SIM card for a new one.

    To add an additional twist to the story, I'm currently visiting Chicago from my home 40 mi. east of LA. At home, my Edge connection is slow but generally usable. Here in Chicago, the network data connection is incredibly slow and unstable, even in the heart of downtown with a strong AT&T connection.

    My heart goes out to all the 3G owners out there who are having trouble, but maybe the problem goes beyond the 3G.

    Whether it's AT&T, Apple, or both, I do hope they get their act together!

    so, with results of two previous posts, that's probably enough times to be sure how it's going - ie: we're getting 0.8 to 1.8Mbps downloads & 0.25Mbps uploads on O2'S 3G (and mostly near top- of range), which is about what O2 led us to believe, two to three times what we were getting before (with the non-HSDPA Nokia E61 & T-Mobile), and maybe about eight times what we'd get via Edge ... ie: can't complain, but hope it gets faster in the future !!
