I have a G5 and a personal laserwiter printer that I would like to use with my system. Is there a way to hook this up to ethernet or USB?

Using Apple printers in Mac OS X:
These printers are QuickDraw-only printers, do not use AppleTalk, and cannot be "recognized" or "identified" in the usual way. If you cannot get one of these to print by just sending data to it, it will not be useable under Mac OS X.

    LaserWriter IISC (SCSI)
    Personal LaserWriter SC (SCSI)
    Personal LaserWriter LS (Serial only)
    Personal LaserWriter 300 (Serial only)
    LaserWriter Select 300 (Serial only)

Apple made no apology for dropping support for the LaserWriter Select 310 in OS 8.5. It is a serial or parallel Postscript printer with no LocalTalk capability. This printer is NOT supported by the linux foundation driver.

LaserWriter Select 310 -- Postscript level 1 only; serial/parallel only

These Printers are Postscript level 1 printers that can be identified and used under the Linux-Foundation Postscript level 1 driver. All these printers are AppleTalk/LocalTalk printers. They also need a converter from AppleTalk-over-Ethernet to AppleTalk/LocalTalk to print in Mac OS X.

    http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/MacOSX/pslevel1#Printers

    LaserWriter
    LaserWriter Plus
    LaserWriter IINT
    LaserWriter IINTX
    Personal LaserWriter NT

These are Postscript level 2 printers that do not support LPR/LPD. All these printers are LocalTalk printers. Except for those marked (Ethernet) they also need a converter from AppleTalk-over-Ethernet to AppleTalk/LocalTalk to print from Macs newer than the Beige G3 and with Mac OS X.

    Personal LaserWriter NTR
    Personal LaserWriter 320
    LaserWriter Select 360
    LaserWriter 4/600 PS

    LaserWriter IIf
    LaserWriter IIg (Ethernet)
    LaserWriter Pro 600
    LaserWriter Pro 630 (Ethernet)

Apple LaserWriter Printers with Ethernet and Built-in LPD:

    LaserWriter 8500 (Ethernet)
    LaserWriter 12/640 PS (Ethernet)
    Color LaserWriter 12/660 PS (Ethernet)
    Color LaserWriter 12/600 PS (Ethernet)
    LaserWriter 16/600PS (Ethernet)
    LaserWriter Pro 810 (Ethernet)

The Personal LaserWriter 320 is a Postscript level 2 printer, and its printing is directly supported by the LaserWriter drivers in Mac OS X.

The printer supports only AppleTalk/LocalTalk, an older protocol for sharing files and printers.

Your Mac supports AppleTalk-over-Ethernet for Printing through the current version of Mac OS X (and for File Sharing, but only through 10.3.9).

What is needed is a "Bridge" between the AppleTalk-over-Ethernet and AppleTalk/LocalTalk. This can be accomplished with either of two commercial stunt-boxes, or a software package that runs on an older beige Mac. The commercial boxes are the Farallon EtherMac iPrint LT (not its evil twin the LS) or the Asante AsanteTalk. Each provides an Ethernet port on one side and a LocalTalk port on the other side. Both are readily available on the used market for modest prices.

    Hallo Grant,
I read the informations about the laserwriters. My MacBookPro have the driver of the Laserwriter Pro 630 v.2010.130 on board but anyhow I can't print with the Pro 630 over ethernet and a 10BaseT Ethernet-Hub with a BNC Connection for the Laserwriter. Whensoever I start the process the printer stops, though the printer was active before. A G4 with 9.2.2 prints excellent.
    What can I do?
    Best wishes

    hundskugel -

Do you have AppleTalk turned on in:
System Preferences > Network > Built-In Ethernet (center pane for AppleTalk)

    Hallo Grant,
yes I do. But in the moment I start to print there appears: "Operation cannot completet, client error, not possible". The Laserwriter 630 Pro has a BNC-Ethernet connector. You can't directly connect the MacBook Pro. You need an Ethenet-Hub (I use a simply 10BaseT Ethernet-Hub. From the hub I go to the MacBook Pro. The printer is chosen in the print center, konfiguration automatically.
    No success.

    Best wishes

That error sounds like you are trying to print with LPR/LPD, but the LaserWriter Pro 630 does not support that method.

You must be certain that you have selected the printer as an AppleTalk printer, and it should appear on the default AppleTalk segment named *, with no zones. You may have to use the ( More Printers ) button to see a drop-down menu that allows selection of AppleTalk printers.

The LaserWriter Pro 630 does not support LPR/LPD Printing. It is an AppleTalk printer.

AppleTalk is not in the main screen under Add-a-Printer Default Browser, and is not available on the IP Printer Browser.

You must choose the ( More Printers ) button. Then select AppleTalk from the drop-down menu at the top of the frame. Your LaserWriter should appear in the list less than a quarter minute.
