Q: vertical lines - there for sure

I want to share my success of getting iMac, that was demoed for a while, before I became user and warranty time started ticking for me. Initially unhappy to discover, that unit was on display at some computer shop (via traces of activities), I am now extremely happy to be found in position to be covered by 12 months warranty, once famous vertical lines issue is there, as it should (same unfortunate serial number). Only weeks were left for this joy to happen.

On the other hand, I am posting this to encourage Apple looking at the essence of problem, and stop playing unaware - when the rest of the world knows issue very well, it would be surprising, that otherwise great company would behave like it does now. If we, Apple users, are goodwilled to slightly overpay for our gadgets, surely we do this with trust in Apple as decent manufacturer of reliable equipment. If manufacturing turns out to have defects (having that for particular serie is sure sign), we, users, and Apple are finding ourselves at crossroads: either our favorite company does right thing to protect our expectations, or we no longer expect equipment to be reliable, we though it should be.

If my PC screens are more robust, than those in Mac, and if there is nobody to stand on our side in such discoveries - well, you got idea.

Personally, I am happy to have warranty, as described. But it is only luck. One cannot expect be lucky all the time.

Apple, please address issue as needed, I want to be able buying your next product.

iMac Core Duo, Mac OS X (10.5.3)

Unfortunately as is with any hardware, issues are bound to occur. On top of that the best thing to do is what everyone here has been doing, letting Apple know. The more people that let them know the more knowledge their engineers, etc have to try to isolate the issue and come up with a way to resolve the issues. It is very frustrating to come up with issues on such nice computers, but in the end I think they usually try to make it right. The best thing to do is to contact applecare either via email or over the phone and allow them to do the troubleshooting and then keep on top of the issue. And as one person said, or probably more, the Applecare plans are well worth the 169 for the imacs (and the others) even though for the most part you may never have any issues with the machines. Just a point of view from the opposite side that may be applicable. As was told when the issue was first popping up with the lines on the display it was made known that they need to know all of the information from anyone having the problem. For those it worked out for, good for you!! (not really in the guidelines, I apologize, just trying to help myself and others understand their point of view.)

    Well my dear smokingmac,

Just let me remind you that this problem started about 4 years ago with the 17" powerbooks and by that time, threads on this forum appeared and disappeared ad nauseum, they were locked, deleted, banned, prohibited etc.
so we are talking of Apple having more or less 4 years to research the failure and come up with a solution for several thousands computers affected as of today, so the question remains:
isn´t about time for Apple to react and stop playing fool with this issue?

Got my screen repaired 3 weeks ago and it was fine UNTIL TODAY, no I have a block of vertical lines (64) that are dead in the last 2/3rds of the panel.

    This is nuts...

Terrible shame this batch of iMacs is so unreliable.

Such a great design, yet such a huge flaw.

In the past i can remember big problems with certain Applelaptops - eg 5300, though historically teh desktops have been great.

Just got off the phone with Apple support. Got their typical answers:

"Apple hasn't heard of this problem. You are the first to report it."

"Your iMac is out of warranty so there's nothing we can do."

    Thanks Nick,

Please keep us informed about the development of the repair process.
Apple do not change components but whole sections and I have heard the rumors that the problem lies on some aging "capacitors" that after one year or so, get damaged and they are the real culprits, so why don´t you ask the service genius to check everything LCD related before changing again the LCD?

Yes thanks for keeping us informed Nick - how many repairs have you had?

Would be interesting to know what parts are replaced etc?

Is it the lcd panel, some capacitors or a graphics chip?

Perhaps someone from Apple can let us know exactly what repair the machines should be receiving when we take them in?

Incidently are there any other issues to watch out for with the W860 iMacs? Seems to be quite a few complaints about the Matshita DVD drives, but no other major issues apart from that.

For my warranty repair, I see LCD being awaited from supply chain, that must be defective part.

Thats the series of my serial number for my 17" iMac - and my blue line has just appeared 5 mins ago, so i looked it up on google - and here i am!!

WHY IS THERE NO REPAIR PROGRAM WHEN SO MANY PEOPLE HAVE THIS ISSUE - there's always doing repair exchanges for defective batteries - screens are a MAJOR issue on a computer!!!! - like a battery to a laptop!!

Because displays are a lot more expensive.

    I still have 17 lines.

    Rachael,

You should give them a call and let them know your problem. Maybe if everyone who has this defect calls Apple they will finally stop saying they're never heard of this problem.

Sad to hear that you too are a new member of the iMac vertical line club

Give Apple a call or drop them a note to let them know.
