Everytime I click on Mac mail, the application "quits unexpectedly" ... I've reported the problem over and over. Once in a while it gives me the option to "reset the settings and relaunch" and I try that but nothing.

I've also rebooted. Also, have updated everything.

You need to look at the logs to see what is happening when you try to open Mail. The next time this happens, open Console from /Applications/Utilities (tip: you may want to drag it to your Dock so it's readily available) and see what is in the logs: it will probably open to Console Messages and perhaps "system.log" which are the most useful.

You may see a message "Mail crashed". If so it will almost certainly be followed by a "crash report written to: /Users/yourname/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/Mail.crash.log". If so, in the Log List in Console (show it if necessary), choose the disclosure triangle against "~/Library/Logs", because '~' is a shortcut for " /Users/yourname/", then click the disclosure triangle against "CrashReporter" and I choose the Mail.crash.log to see what happened.

These logs are cumulative, and separated by "********". They start with a header including the Date/Time. You need to scroll back from the bottom, so that you can select the last log and post it here. Someone may be able to interpret it for you.

This is a known issue with ToDo items. The only fix is to do this:

    1. Quit Mail if it's running.
    2. Open iCal and Cut your ToDo items, then save changes and quit iCal.
    3. Start Mail and see if it crashes; if not, quit Mail, open iCal and Paste your ToDo items back, save the changes and quit.
    4. Start Mail again and see if it crashes; if not, then your problem is resolved.

What does iCal have to do with Mac Mail?

ToDo items are stored in iCal, even though you might create them in Mail, so the programs need to communicate with each other.

When you say "Cut the ToDo Items" do you mean just hide them? Or, do you mean delete them?

No, I mean Cut them (Command-X).

What causes this problem and can I never have To Do items showing WHILE I'm using Mac Mail?

We don't know what causes the problem specifically, though Apple is aware of it and I presume they are working on a fix for it, hopefully with the upcoming 10.5.5 release. Until such a fix comes, this is the only solution for it. That doesn't mean you can't have ToDo items; it just means that at times Mail or iCal may crash due to this issue.
