Q: Powerbook 1400c.  Did I kill it?

I have an old Powerbook 1400c that was working very well. I decided that I wanted to play music files through my stereo system. To do this I ran a cable from the headphone jack to my receivers AUX 1 input. I found a nice little mini-rca plug that splits the signal to right and left channels. I then ran two cables to my receiver where I plugged them into the rca AUX 1 imput. The minute I turned the computer on there was a little puff of smoke from the right side of the keyboard and the unit went dead. Now there is no response. No hum, no lights, no screen. Is there anything that I can do?

I doubt that an attempt to reset the Power Manager (or other tricks) will do any good at this point. Apparently, there was a short-circuit or an overload of some kind. It will become necessary to open the computer in order to inspect the electronic components.

If the computer cannot be repaired, you could remove the hard drive and install it into an external USB or FireWire enclosure. This makes it possible to save any important files to a modern Mac.

Further information about the electrical characteristics of the sound system can be found in the PowerBook 1400 document here.
