    SoGood,

I have had problems redeeming free songs from Starbucks and when I read your post, I went into iTunes support one last time under 7.7 to see if I could grab the queued downloads, which I was previously unable to get. Sure enough, they downloaded this time. Something must have been going on with the iTunes servers unrelated to 8.0. Anyway, I have since performed the update to 8.0 iTunes and so far, so good. Only time will tell. I am looking forward to the 2.1 update this Friday.

You will not be charged a second time for an app purchase, so just go ahead and do what you need to do to get your apps back. If you are charged again, you can report a problem and your account will be reviewed and credited. This did happen to me and the root cause of the second charge was actually a corrupted iTunes account. There was no arguing or haggling about the charges. Apple just refunded everything on the order, even though one of the apps was not a duplicate. I would not worry about this.

There is no way to understand what comes in iTunes 8 vs FW 2.1 but there are enough problems out there in iPhone land that you will be wanting both. It's a question of how long you want to wait before you go. I've decided to get both as soon as possible since I am already compromised in my use of the phone and am now an expert in iPhone restoration (as are most people on this thread).

Good luck everyone. I'm keeping my finders crossed that the worst of the issues are either fixed entirely or reduced to only slight annoyances.

After installing Spore and updating 2 other apps, not one third part app works any more. I found that all the default iPhone apps still do work (Safari, phone, SMS, Google Maps) but anything that has been downloaded or purchased crashes back to the home screen when launched. I'm in the process of backing up and resetting my iPhone now.

I'm very disappointed with this series of events and I'm surprised that Apple has let this get this far. Crashing apps is what Jobs moaned about when he first spoke of not letting 3rd party apps on the iPhone. One would think Apple would have better quality control of this platform if Jobs was so insistent that apps don't ruin the iPhone experience.

I sure hope this blasted 2.1 update fixes this nonsense.

iTunes 8 did NOT solve my problem. I installed it yesterday and my iPhone was great. Did many syncs and updated apps. All ok when I went to sleep. Today I downloaded video (tv show from itunes) and put it onto my phone. I tried to play it and received message that This Video Cannot be Played. So...check others. Some played, some didn't (received same message). I removed the new video and resynced it onto phone. Same result. I reset the iphone settins (saw in another forum that this might solve non-playing video) and when I went to try it...no video or music on phone. Apps no longer load. Grrrrr. Just completed restore. I would wait for fridays update but I need to have my phone functional as ipod too!
I'm trying so hard to keep my love for apple but I don't like this feeling....not knowing if my iphone is going to let me down yet again!

After the problem wasn't fixed the second time I tried the restore/reauthorize solution, I installed iTunes 8 last night. All is well again, everything works, but I won't even think about syncing again until after Friday's firmware update. Until then, wall charge while crossing fingers...

So sorry about that. Eagerly awaiting other reports from iTunes 8 upgraders about whether it fixed the problem. Seems rather doubtful now In the meantime, I'm sticking with iTunes 7.7.zero

I took my new iPhone 3G back to the CW store for an unrelated issue. They straightaway gave me another one (unnecessarily, as it happens). Got home, authorised it, restored the backup -and none of the apps I'd downloaded worked. They all started and then crashed back to home screen 2 seconds later. I tried restoring etc. but no improvement. Searching the Internet found lots of people with the same problem, and pointed the finger towards a syncing issue with iTunes, but no sensible solutions so I ended up ringing Apple customer support. The solution is to -
Go to iTunes store (on menu bar at top of screen) and authorise computer
    Connect the iPhone
On the summary screen, click on the apps tab and deselect all, apply
On the edit tab, select preferences, syncing, then reset sync library
Finally go to summary tab and reapply all the applications.
I was relieved when this worked.

Glad it worked for you, it had worked for me once also. That is, until I tried to sync again, and the same fix wouldn't work twice. I'd suggest you relish the luck you had in restoring, but avoid syncing until after Friday's firmware update is released and be sure you upgrade to iTunes 8 when you do.

Ok, there are still risks with iTunes 8 and OS 2.0.2 (no big surprise I guess). After updating to iTunes 8, I upgraded quite a number of apps and re-synced. Later that evening, 3rd party apps died again. Although a restore fixed the problem, I don't think i'll do any more app updating until OS 2.1 is out.

I had downgraded to iTunes 7.7 and was having no further trouble with crashing apps. I foolishly decided not to wait for the new firmware and installed iTunes 8.0. I thought there was a really good chance the root of the problem was iTunes. Alas, soon after, my apps all began to crash again. I was able to reinstall them and things are functioning fine for the moment, but I will not be syncing my iPhone or updating or installing any apps until the new firmware is safely on board, sometime Friday, I hope.

This has just become much too bizarre - after getting all the apps to work again after the iTunes 8 update things were cruising along today without any apparent problem. Late this afternoon I noticed that SMS messages which were previously shown with a contact's name now showed only as an SMS to a phone number. Opening contacts, I found had only a handful of my actual contacts available, which was why the SMS had nothing to refer back to. I powered down, restarted, no change. Rebooted and....you guessed it: Apps don't work. Contacts are decimated. Almost laughable (I said almost). I'm not about to waste even more time trying any of these patchwork non-fixes any longer, I'll just wait until Friday's band-aid. In the meantime I'll have to settle for using this "phone" as a phone. What a concept...

By the way, whoever up the line earlier apologized to "Steve" for your impatience, you should be ashamed of yourself. You paid handsomely for technology that doesn't work. You're the one who should be apologized to - and compensated for your inconvenience and wasted time. And to whoever earlier said they expected a class action suit to come out if the firmware update doesn't fix the problem, sign me up!

A safe bet is to assume that this is still a Permissions issue. The Apps don't "Crash", they are closed immediately because the iPhone sees them as being copyright protected and will not allow them to run. This is why when this happens, you also do not have access to any of your media, whether it be from your personal collection or from the iTunes Store. I believe they are on the right track in releasing the newest firmware for the iPod Touch and then releasing iTunes v8.0 along with separate updates/installs for Bonjour and for the MobileMe Windows Control Panel features days before the widespread launch of the iPhone Firmware update. And, according to a number of sources, the newest firmware has in fact solved a number of issues related to the iPod Touch that also plague the iPhone as well. Only time will tell, though. At first I was rather upset at the fact that we all would have to wait for the update even though the update was released for the iPod Touch, but after the mess of the MobileMe launch and everything else that has happened, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt here. Although they do probably have people working night and day to resolve all of these issues, the territory that Apple is moving towards in the mobile phone industry as a whole is still very new to them.

Will the fixes in the newest firmware, expected to solve all of these issues in this post, redeem Apple for all of the problems that we've experienced? I don't believe so. It's definitely a step in the right direction, though...

    Hurry Up Apple!
I don't want to wait another day for this!

I've had similar encounters where a reboot of the iPhone led to the failure of all 3rd party apps. So the aim now is to not reboot, don't update/install apps until Fri.

I couldn't agree more, and that's what I fully intended to do....except these problems came back out of nowhere BEFORE I powered down or rebooted. I'd planned to do nothing other than recharge from the wall charger, seeking to avoid any conflict the software might encounter via iTunes. Now I'm re-syncing just to see if it makes something click again - can't break what's already broken, right?
