Currently Being ModeratedSep 9, 2008 2:26 PM (in response to Grifforama)Friday will be an interesting day with regard to feedback, will await the update and judge it then. Hopefully all that will remain is the mysterious missing copy & paste feature
Currently Being ModeratedSep 10, 2008 12:40 AM (in response to musicvan)I'm really excited about the next phase of beta testing!
seriously: I will be more than happy if 2.1 really fixes the reception issues - I can live with the rest of the bugs.Mac Mini Dual Core; Apple Wireless Keyboard and Mouse, iPain 3G

Sure this discussion thread will be busy on Friday fix or no fix! At least software bugs can be fixed but hardware cannot, One "fix" I hope that does not happen is the increase in number of bars shown to fool people!
Currently Being ModeratedSep 10, 2008 10:29 AM (in response to musicvan)fingers crossed what was wrong was clear to see, and so to fix ... must say, though, I'm expecting it to take a few iterations ! OTOH, he did say there were performance enhancements as well as bug fixes, so you never know !
Great device, even now !24" Alu iMac / HiRes17" MBP + 'Air / PPC G4 desk + laptop / unplugged 1Tb TC /, Mac OS X (10.5.4), / 'G4s use 10.4.0 and OS8.6 + OS9.2 for legacy stuff
Currently Being ModeratedSep 11, 2008 4:55 AM (in response to Nubz N.)another interesting observation (i know hand gestures for holding the iphone have been discussed a lot, i just wanted to share this bit with figures):
if i hold my iphone 3g like that:
I get 2 bars of 3G signal, or -97/-101 dbm.
now if i hold my iphone in the very same position BUT only with 2 fingers in the upper left corner - I get 5 bars or -77 dbm (which is a surprisingly good value today).
so the difference is actually 20 dbm or more, depending on how you hold the device! I know it would change - but this much?
And given that 3 dbm can be considered about doubling of the signal strength - 20 dbm IS much.
And: this is reproducable. I wonder how firmware 2.1 will solve this - looks like a design flaw to me.Mac Mini Dual Core; Apple Wireless Keyboard and Mouse, iPain 3G
Currently Being ModeratedSep 11, 2008 5:30 AM (in response to taltal)Not sure I understand where your two fingers are - earlier in this thread, people mentioned that holding it between two thumb (botton left) & one finger (top left) gave that sort of improvement ...
(thumb bottom-left needs to be middle bottom if the speaker is to be audible, of course)24" Alu iMac / HiRes17" MBP + 'Air / PPC G4 desk + laptop / unplugged 1Tb TC /, Mac OS X (10.5.4), / 'G4s use 10.4.0 and OS8.6 + OS9.2 for legacy stuff

Currently Being ModeratedSep 11, 2008 7:24 AM (in response to taltal)Just seen that the 3G Blackberry Bold will be available on ATT sometime in October.
It will be VERY VERY interesting to see how the reception issues play out with that one.

Currently Being ModeratedSep 12, 2008 7:54 AM (in response to Nubz N.)Just installed 2.1 3G signal is much better 3 bars in my house when always barely 1 before. Speed better also. Fingers crossed.MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.4)
Currently Being ModeratedSep 12, 2008 8:00 AM (in response to Sparky Dunno)I am getting 5 bars of 3G coverage in my office. Before the update I got 0-2. After I did the update i received 1 bar and going to no service. A reboot of the phone corrected this and so far so good.iPhone 3G
Currently Being ModeratedSep 12, 2008 8:03 AM (in response to marc.fogel)Hello All,
More bars... in more places? Yes. But...
Make sure you are checking your dBm signal strength. I did the 2.1 upgrade and my son did not. I had 1 more bar than he did on the way to school. But the same dBm signal.

Currently Being ModeratedSep 12, 2008 8:03 AM (in response to marc.fogel)I am worse off. Before 2.1 I got about 1 bar, but usable at home. Now no 3F a all. Tried reseting, switching off 3G and on again. Still no 3GApple Mac Mini, Mac OS X (10.5.4), Windows Vista SP1 and Outlook 2007 SP1
Currently Being ModeratedSep 12, 2008 8:17 AM (in response to marc.fogel)I hate to ask this, but does your speaker seem louder. I was perfectly fine with it before but now it seems louder.iPhone 3G
Currently Being ModeratedSep 12, 2008 8:27 AM (in response to marc.fogel)After the 2.1 update I get 5 bars of 3g at home where I used to get only 1 bar. Now..the signal strength is -95 so I'm not sure if the bars are accurate.Mac OS X (10.4.10)
Currently Being ModeratedSep 12, 2008 9:20 AM (in response to goncode)No improvement here whatsoever I'm afraid. I can only assume this update has included a kind of anaesthetic for the masses. It is a cosmetic veneer to make us dummies think we are now getting a better reception than we did before.
Switching 3G off produces a good 5 minutes of "No Service" - before it finally finds the 5-bar Edge service. When it does find 3G again, it is exactly the same as before - 113 db- (ie crap) This is a fault with a phone that we have not experienced with any other phone used in the UK since the old brick-like Nokias. I am now very angry and I will be making this as public as possible from now on.
I personally don't give a flying stuff what the zombie Apple followers say about whinging. This is a very bad situation that has never been acknowledged as even a minor problem. He can treat his "fellow Americans" like idiots but he won't treat me like one. Thankfully we have the Sale Of Goods Act over here, and I will be enforcing it on O2 and Apple now. I gave them the benefit of doubt 'till 2.1 came out, but they have blown it. I had a feeling they would try this on.
What a shame. This a love affair that has come to an end. I have been betrayed. They won't do it twice.iMacs, Intel 20 inch 2.0 with 1.5 gig ram, Mac OS X (10.5.4), 2 InteliMacs, 15" PB, 12" PB, Loads of iPods, 2 Airport Expresses
