Q: vertical lines - there for sure

I want to share my success of getting iMac, that was demoed for a while, before I became user and warranty time started ticking for me. Initially unhappy to discover, that unit was on display at some computer shop (via traces of activities), I am now extremely happy to be found in position to be covered by 12 months warranty, once famous vertical lines issue is there, as it should (same unfortunate serial number). Only weeks were left for this joy to happen.

On the other hand, I am posting this to encourage Apple looking at the essence of problem, and stop playing unaware - when the rest of the world knows issue very well, it would be surprising, that otherwise great company would behave like it does now. If we, Apple users, are goodwilled to slightly overpay for our gadgets, surely we do this with trust in Apple as decent manufacturer of reliable equipment. If manufacturing turns out to have defects (having that for particular serie is sure sign), we, users, and Apple are finding ourselves at crossroads: either our favorite company does right thing to protect our expectations, or we no longer expect equipment to be reliable, we though it should be.

If my PC screens are more robust, than those in Mac, and if there is nobody to stand on our side in such discoveries - well, you got idea.

Personally, I am happy to have warranty, as described. But it is only luck. One cannot expect be lucky all the time.

Apple, please address issue as needed, I want to be able buying your next product.

    Do you have AppleCare?

I don't and called Apple last week and they said they wouldn't fix it.

The end is near. After 20+ lines the screen now has developed a white fog over the entire thing. Looks like it's external monitor time for an otherwise beautiful machine.

People need to stop taking no for an answer. Just because one rep says you can't get it fixed doesn't mean that it's true (or acceptable).

I see many people in this thread are loyal Apple customers who own mulitple machines and clearly deserve better. Phone back again and don't take any crap (though be polite). Here's a list of tips:

*- If you are a loyal Apple customer let them know.*
*- Explain that fact that the fault is a common defect with the machine (rather than something caused by abuse/misuse).*
*- Point out just how many threads here discuss the problem (and how many have been deleted)*
*- Remind them of the legal case in France that Apple lost on this issue where they had to refund the price of the machine
*- Ask for a supervisor if you don't get anywhere becsaue they will have more power to help.*

I own an iMac G5 17", and searched for info on the vertical line issue when the single line to the far right turned into 3 lines. Thought the first line was an anomaly, but soon discovered it was not. Disappointed with the information found about this problem, I worked around the issue until the lines went from 3 to 6 to 8 and now suddenly within the past four days to 14.

Fourteen lines on a monitor that's used for video editing & graphic creation.

I have much older Macs that still work and have no problems displaying everything clearly and without obstacles.

Been buying and using Apple computers for over 11 years. I really find it hard to believe that given the number of people I've read about who have this problem, more is not being done.

Still disappointed, but holding out hope Apple will do the right thing when I call their support line.

develop some Dutch skills and realize it's not just one rep who claims they repair it for free.
    http://www.intermactivity.be/forum/showthread.php?t=99706
more people did get a free repair(even a new mac if it doesn't get repaired as it should be)
the people on the support line give you a case number you have to take with you to the apple repair center with your mac.

Me to have started similar problem since 2 months , 3 different coloured vertical lines,
but out of warranty= what to do=I had great feeling about mac people=EVERYTHING JUST PERFECT- Thats what I had thought!
Its common expectation that after spending so much money irrespective of warranty at least 2-3 years nothing major would go wrong !
I have been told to get replaced the display =just on phone when i discussed the same with service center.
Its not a joke TO REPLACE iMAC Display.
After seeing all these posts I have come to conclusion that, YES - definitely ,there got to be some manufacturing defect =which MAC people have failed to tell or rectify.

Please , someone suggest other alternative= SURE I am not gonna change my display for such a huge cost -Its not that worth !!!!!!!!!!

Buy another monitor, it is way cheaper than fixing with Apple the integrated one. For $200 USD you can buy a decent 19" one and have it attached to your iMac

    Lucky you!
I'm in Greece and the local Apple exclusive authorised reseller (Rainbow computers) said they know nothing about it!... I told them that I belong to the W86***U2N club and their response was mama-Apple gave them no instructions about it!!!

I'm using Macs 21 years and is the first time that I know that Apple refuses to repair a well documented manufacturing failure (3000 pages in a google search). I guess their been-counters and lawyers said that is OK to ignore it!

I just wish a law firm had bought a bunch of these W86 machines...
Well, lets wait and see the next customer satisfaction and brand loyalty stats… They'll be out of my list.

I don't think this is a display problem, at least in my case. Why? Because if I restart the computer in safe mode (holding down the shift key while starting) then my display is fine -- no artifacts. Reinstalling the system software from scratch also fixes it for a few days.

I think this is either a logic board or video card failure and that replacing the screen will not be a long-term solution.

Just got my 5th vertical line today. This time it's a blue one. That makes 1 blue, 2 yellow and 2 magenta lines.
