problems with pop mail fetching and application update after 2.1 firmware

    what really annoys me is the fact that even when fetching manually, the emails take forever to load.....this is completely unacceptable service from such a high quality phone.

    My Google App IMAP also stopped fetching every 15 minutes after upgrading to 2.1 on my 3G. It works very rarely (I think only when the phone is being actively used and it is due for a fetch. Never seen it work when the phone is in standby)

    I too was having similar problems after installing 2.1 I have 3 email accounts, MobileMe, Exchange and POP. I tried multiple hard resets, restore, deleting and re-entering accounts, etc. Nothing worked....

    Then, I turned off SSL on all my accounts and now things have been working perfectly for days. Push/Fetch, etc. all working fine.

    Hopefully this will work for others

    I would not want to use any mail accounts without SSL, as your passwords are in the clear somewhere along the line.

    I specifically omit certain mail accounts on my phone because they don't support using SSL to log in.

    Turning off SSL for all accounts DOES NOT work for me. Turning it back on....

    I'm new here and to iPhone (about a week). I have had some problems. But it is working now. What I found is that if I have more then one account for email it starts having problems. But now I have only one. POP(Work). And I am having no problems at all. It pulls the mail with no problems. It is a POP account without SSL.

    I have only one email account - GMail - and it requires SSL (as any good account should do, but many still do not). So turning off SSL is not an option for Gmail users. I think that if your POP account is really working it is just a fluke and not related to whether SSL is on or off. It has been pretty well established by plenty of responders to this thread that fetch will work (SSL not withstanding) only if the phone is not on standby or is on a charger.

    I am a software developer with 20 years of experience on any number of platforms, mainframes, mini's, PC's, you name it. I am also an independent sofware vendor who understands Q/C, testing, and clear communication when problems arise. I understand that software will always have problems and that sometimes significant bugs slip through the Q/C process. I am disappointed that we have to deal with a bug this serious in what most heavy email users would call "mission critical" to the function of the phone, but I'm willing to cut Apple some slack if they can move quickly to fix it. What I don't understand in this situation is how this thread can grow to the size it has without some official notice from Apple that they acknowledge the problem and are working on it. This forum is hosted on Apple's own site, for goodness sake! Why can't they do the minimally-professional courtesy of having an actual Apple tech-rep give us some basic "We hear you, it will be n-days till a patch is ready" kind of update? I know that many IT/business types (like me) held off on an iPhone purchase until the 3G over concern for business integration issues, etc. The new software was supposed to be much more business-friendly but what is NOT business-friendly at this point is the lackluster response of the Apple organization to situations like this. Hey Apple - if anybody up there is reading this stuff (on your own site) - every day this rocks along without some form of acknowledgement or fix you are really losing the confidence of the business community. You've got a mission-critical "smartphone" function that is crippled and as far as we can tell (officially) nobody in Cupertino has a clue. Laugh all you want at Microsoft, but I guarantee that a bug this severe would have had an extensive Knowledge Base article with possible work arounds and an ETA for patch availability withing 24 hours of the reports.

    Just for the record.
    Same problem with my 2G ever since the 2.x upgrades.
    Worked great on 1.x, got worse on 2.0.x and finally doesn't work at all with 2.1 (except sometimes when I reboot).

    Since I am located in Germany with basically perfect 2G coverage, I don't think it has something to do with the AT&T network, as some state ;o)

    This issue is a real pain and - to me - defeats one of the main purposes of getting the iPhone. I did not have a BB before, but maybe it's the better choice.
    I hope Apple fixes this one quickly. It's already a real embarassement after everyone told me how 'great' Apple products are.

    What we need here is a way to draw attention to this issue until Apple responds. This is a serious enough issue that there needs to be a response from Apple. This is not as simple as some app not working right. This is one of the main reasons people want something more than just a phone. What good is it if I can't be notified when I have mail?

    I have contacted The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW). Hopefully they will raise the issue on their site.

    Others should contact anyone that can help raise the attention level of this issue.

    Well I went to the Apple store today and of course they told me they haven't heard of this problem! Ya, right! I told her to go and look at the Apple message board and of course she wouldn't. She did swap my phone and I took it home and synced it and guess what same thing is still happening. I didn't even update it to 2.1, I left it at 2.0.2. I minds well go ahead and update it to 2.1, what have I got to lose!

    Found a way and might be specific to me but i had it plugged in to my mac and I was able to go into my mail settings (finally) and then I disabled the Mail option from my ME account and so far so good. Must be a sync problem with ME. I really could care less for my me account but atleast my exchange and my 2 other IMAP account are working then I'm satisfied for now. I can atleast check my work related email!

    THIS MUST BE ADDRESSED BY APPLE OR A REFUND IS DUE.

    I was able to put away my Blackberry 2 months ago because my iPhone 3G with 2.02 was stable and reliable enough that I no longer needed the Blackberry for exchange email. Well, ever since the 2.0 "upgrade" it's gotten so bad that I HAVE to turn OFF all email functions AND unfortunately, I had to go back to using the good old Blackberry again. Some of us work for a living and staying connected via email is a MUST these days. Apple, this is unacceptable.

    I had the same problem, but with me the trick with disabling automatic sleep mode seems to have done it. at last for the past hour:

    I choose put to sleep -> never and activated standby mode manually. mail fetching (to different accounts) every 15 min. works perfectly now.

    can't think why, though. are there 2 different standby modes - the one induced by the preference, the other just by pressing the button?

    Most likely the people who rely on their email for business or deem timing to be critical, have a Blackberry. My wife and other folks I know with iPhones couldn't care less whether a) they get their email on time and b) if they even get their email at all.

    Having owned Blackberry and iPhone (1st and now 3G)...I would still say if email is critical to you, NOTHING can ever touch Blackberry. This is a technical fact due to the way Blackberry infrastructure is setup and why it's so reliable and instant.

    My point is I don't think all iPhone users or even a majority care about push email or even getting it every 15 mins...it's a minority as those that care about true push email are using Blackberry
