You'll need to have itunes connected as a sharing library only for this to occur. Why would you not want your purchases to transfer back to your mac, not having them backed up is not very secure.

And is your library connected as a primary (syncing) library.

Yes, my MacBook is the default synced library. Movies sync to the ATV just fine. The option "Transfer Purchases from 'Apple TV'" IS available but when I choose it nothing happens.

The transfer purchase option is always there, whether you have purchases to transfer or not.

I am very frustrated that I cannot transfer shows or movies that I've purchased on my Apple TV to my MacBook Air or any other Apple device for that matter. Is there a way to do this? I've purchased over two seasons worth of tv shows as well as some movies and have no way of watching them except through the Apple TV. This situation is made more irritating by the fact that I cannot rent movies now through my Apple TV because at every attempt I receive a message saying "Disk Full: There's not enough space on your Apple TV. Make sure iTunes is open on your computer, or delete from your Apple TV and try again." I have done this with iTunes open on the computer and I still continue to receive this message. Please let me know how I can solve this problem without being forced to delete shows or movies that I bought in order to make space on my Apple TV. If there is no way to transfer movies or shows from the Apple TV, then what options do I have for saving those shows while at the same time making space to rent movies on the Apple TV? It seems like many people are having these problems and I've tried checking the automatic sync and even looking at the preferences on my iTunes settings, but I can't seem to find anything that has to do with the Apple TV. I read where someone said they have an option Transfer from Apple TV. I don't have that option availabl. Where is it?

With your AppleTV selected in iTunes, go to the file drop down menu...it should be there.

I am having a similar problem. Transferring tv shows back to the computer worked for a long time, then suddenly it stopped. I have never been able to transfer movies back though. Very frustrating with no help from Apple on this issue.

No offense, but this is soooo ridiculous. The sync controls in iTunes give me the option to NOT sync tv shows or whatnot, but they simply don't work.

In this particular case I have reasons not to care about backing up. I want control of this process, not the process to control me.

When is apple going to fix this completely broken behavior?

I really hope this is a bug! I have the same problem too. I have purchased many TV shows via my ATV but when I try "Transfer Purchases"... nothing. All those shows are stuck on the Apple TV and no way to transfer or back them up!

Of all the issues that I haven't seen a regularly repeatable solution to, this one concerns me more than most. The endgame here if a proper solution isn't forthcoming is a restore to free up space on the tv, this could clearly wipe out around £ 100.00 of purchases in some situations.

The issue as I see it isn't clear and could be as a result of badly tagged files being made available for purchase for the tv or a software problem on the tv.
