Ever since downloading iTunes 8.0, I receive a warning indicating that the iTunes drivers used for importing or burning CD's & DVD's are missing.

I've uninstalled and re-installed iTunes and everything Apple about 7 times now with no luck. I've download GEAR drivers, tried deleting registry upperfilters and everything I could possibly find on the support forums. Apple support hasn't been able to help me.

Can anyone tell me how I might be able to fix this? There is obviously some conflict with some drivers on my system. Everything in iTunes works fine, but the error message is killing me. Although, I haven't tried burning a CD with iTunes lately - maybe it doesn't work... I just want the error to go away.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. I'm running Windows XP, SP3.

Thanks!
Ben

    I'm having this same problem, only I'm running Vista. In the past this problem WAS solved by simply "Repairing" it with the installer. But now, it no workey. Anyone besides us?

    I'm having the same exact problem. I read online to go into the registry files as you did. I inserted both a cd and dvd into my drive but I didn't try burning. I don't know, they need to fix this because I'm not about the uninstall my drivers again

    My thoughts exactly. I've had this problem every time I clean up my registry. And I've always known I would have to "repair" it when I was done. This is the first time it hasn't worked. It's frustrating! I even tried the suggestion posted here:

    http://worldwidetech.wordpress.com/2008/09/11/itunes-8-loses-cd-dvd-import-burni ng-drivers/

    No workey. Can't wait until this is resolved!

    Hey everyone,

    This article worked for me...but please see my notes below.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302976

    I downloaded the GEAR drivers as suggested from another discussion (www.gearsoftware.com under support - driver updates) and then I modified the registry key referenced in the above article, HOWEVER, I had to make one adjustment: I had to create the entry called "UpperFilters" because I did not have it in there. This is what I did:

    I went to "regedit" to locate the following string as the article suggests:

    HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE1 0318}

    I created a new "Multi String Value" within this key (very important to select Multi String Value).

    I named it UpperFilters, and then double clicked it to add the GEARAspiWDM text WITH a carriage return.

    I did not reboot, but closed RegEdit and then closed iTunes. I've restarted iTunes three times now with no error message! Let me know if this works for you...hopefully it's as easy as that. I just wonder why this happened in the first place!

    Modifying the registry can be dangerous, so please read the article completely...proceed at your own risk! In this case, for me it was worth it!

    Thanks Ben! Worked for me so far. I think it's a little strange that Apple's made a mistake that requires the troubled user to edit the registry. Oh wait...no I don't! Thanks again Ben!

    Hi all,

    I searched the answers everywhere, all around the websites. The problem was always there. If I didn't have the error message in itunes my dvd-cd driver was wrong and if I change the parameters in registry, my dvd-cd driver worked correctly in windows but not in itunes.

    After 8 months, I found the solution yesterday. I did the changes and WOW all is OK now. Believe me, this is THE SOLUTION and I'm very happy.

    You must do the changes with the registy with regedit (see other answers) but after is VERY IMPORTANT that you follow this ...

    Go to this website and follow the instructions for the file AFS driver

    http://www.gearsoftware.com/wiki/index.php?title=CD/DVDdrives_disappear_after_installingiTunes

    Here the complete explanation:

    ummary:

    After installing a GEAR Software or a GEARWorks GEAR Powered Product (such as Apple iTunes and Norton Ghost) on Vista, the CD/DVD drives disappear in Windows Explorer and the installed software is unable to detect any CD/DVD drives on the system.

    Discussion:

    After investigating this issue, we have determined that the issue is being caused by the presence of the Audio File System (AFS) driver from Oak Technologies.

    The AFS driver adds CD recording functionality to certain versions of the following software:

    * HP Memories Disc Creator
    * Liquid Audio
    * Portal Player
    * Oak Technology SimpliCD
    * Broderbund's Print Shop version 20

    It appears that the AFS driver does not meet Windows Vista driver signing requirements and thus is not compatible with Vista. As a result, the AFS driver prevents the GEARAspiWDM.sys driver from functioning correctly resulting in CD/DVD drives ‘disappearing’ in Windows Explorer and applications using the GEARworks API, such as Apple iTunes and Norton Ghost.

    Solution:

    Disabling the AFS driver appears to resolve the issue.

    This can be done by renaming the afs.sys driver file in the C:\Windows\System32\Drivers directory to afs.txt and rebooting the system. After the reboot the CD/DVD drives should re-appear in Windows Explorer and be available in GEAR and GEARworks powered product (such as Apple iTunes and Norton Ghost).

    Note that disabling the AFS driver may result in the loss of the CD recording functionality in the above mentioned software that uses the AFS driver.

    Ahhh worked for me too!!
    Thanks so much for sharing. As crazy as it sounds I just wanted it up and running so I could burn my son's yo gabba gabba dvd I bought from itunes but now I see you can't do that so I'm at a loss but at least it is working now.
    Thanks again!

    too have experienced the same problem. The fix to add an UpperFilters with "GEARAspiWDM" followed by a return only resolved the error message relating to the warning indicating that the iTunes drivers used for importing or burning CD's & DVD's are missing. While I can now import CDs to iTunes 8 still no luck in getting it to burn. I have installed the GEAR drivers and followed the steps in http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302976

    but to no avail. I also tried the suggestion related to Vista that appears below but to no avail. Hope Apple has spent at much time trying to eliminate this problem as I have trying to fix it!

    From GEAR works:
