    I just tried the "unlock captcha" thing too and it seems to have worked for me.

    Not only I remember the post, but I used it to tell the news sites about the issue since Apple is not responding to this thread (which clearly they are aware of).

    I don't have free time to submit stories to websites, but if that is the only way to fix my problem, I don't have any other choice. Apple, you made me an activist!

    As a business owner I can - sort of - understand why you don't want to have control over things link this, but you have to remember why the whole thing started in the first place: No acknowledgment from Apple about the issue. Something like: Yes we are aware of this and will be fixing it in the next 10 years or Bugger off. There is no such issue as 2.1 email fetch you're all bunch of morons.

    It doesn't matter what they say. Just say something. Anything!

    That did nothing for me.. I have tried it several times.. Still no fetch while asleep and on battery. As some other people have pointed out it's not just GMail.. Hope that did work for you, but for me it does nothing.. Firmware 2.1 changed something in how the background fetch works, at this point I think only Apple can shed some light on the matter, but they are unwilling to post anything here..

    I've been trying everything in this thread for a week now and nothing works.

    My phone operates great, when plugged in. But when on battery, it stops fetching automatically, regardless of settings.

    I use only one POP account that worked fine before the update.

    I was one of the people who posted the press links, that got deleted. I was emailed and told to re-read the terms of agreement for these discussion forums. Technical info only.

    Our only hope is that Apple's technical people are reading these, and not just the content/abuse monitors.

    I'm seeing the same problem - and it's getting OLD. Personally, I'd prefer to see the reverse: NO email push/pull while I'm connected (I'm there at my machine!!), but let it run while disconnected.

    I'm just going to reaffirm the whole ugly situation. After the initial frustration of getting my Roadrunner email system to work on the Iphone 3G I was a happy clam. But alas after upgrading to 2.1 last week the phone completely failed (would not turn on). I reset/re synched it off my MacBook but no dice on the email system. Appeared as though I had a connection but no incoming.Fussed all morning and finally my emails came through via the pop server, I'm not sure I can remember what I did since I changed so many setting back and forth. What a relief until, alas that lost the connection. Something has to give. Perhaps Apple needs more R&D test time before broadcasting it's upgrades.

    Just to report back, this didn't work for me at all. It looks like this has nothing to do with GMail

    Andrew T. You posted a while back here.. This problem is still around.. And we aren't hearing anything more from You/Apple.. Can you please update us on this issue? This is getting ridiculous. Strike that, it's gotten past ridiculous.

    OK - I just got off the phone with apple iPhone help (very friendly and polite rep named Danny). He had me go through just about all of the fixes discussed here in this thread. As most of you might imagine, none of the fixes worked. He went through all of the solutions in his database of answers, then offered to set up an in-store genius bar meeting. "Might be a hardware problem," he stated. So, I will see what the genius says on Thursday.... I guess the good thing is my phone is less than a week old, I can still return it, cancel that att plan, go back to my old device, and wait for the BB Bold to be available.... so much for being all-mac though. sigh.

    I don't know if I want to say this out loud... mine's been working for the last 9 hours with no problem (knocking on wood). I will be interested to hear what the genius says, tho!

    You will probably get a new (well, "reconditioned") phone that has the same problem.

    It's not a hardware problem. My phone, and many, many others here had working email which broke after installing 2.1.

    Those who say it "works" may not be verifying it under the exact failing conditions:

    * Auto mail fetch fails with:
    * Phone suspended/asleep AND
    * NOT using WiFi AND
    * Phone is not plugged into computer or AC supply AND
    * Have tried over the course of several hours AND
    * Using firmware 2.1

    Contacts and calendar push are working fine. It's only auto mail checking (push or fetch) and notification thru the wireless provider while the phone is suspended.

    For those who have this working solidly, I would be interested to know what is different in their settings or configuration...

    Yep, that is what I imagine will happen as well. At least I am "lucky" enough to be able to get rid of this phone without a hitch if Apple does not get this fixed within the next week. I have been fidgeting with this problem WAY too much over the past few days; my failing conditions are a little less restricted than what you list, btw. Here are mine:

    * Auto mail fetch fails with:
    * Phone suspended/asleep AND
    * _Whether or not_ using WiFi AND
    * Phone is not plugged into AC supply AND
    * Have tried over the course of several hours AND
    * Using firmware 2.1

    Oddly, mine fails even when charging from the usb port of the computer, but not when plugged into AC.

    For the past few hours has not been pushing no matter what, until the phone wakes up. But that is probably something completely unrelated...

    After doing everything possible (serious, everything) I had only one option left to try, replace the SIM card.

    I'm not sure if 2.1 breaks the SIM card or if there is compatibility issues with older SIM cards, but I went into the AT&T store yesterday and asked for a new SIM as my last resort. Told the AT&T guy about my issue and he was happy to replace with a new SIM.

    Well, 24 hours later my emails are coming in as they should(seriously knocking on wood as I don't want to jinx it).

    I agree with everyone that this seems to be a software issue, but as soon as I swapped the SIM card, my emails starting flowing.

    One good thing did come of this(besides emails finally working) was that now after Apple swapped my phone, my new one doesn't have the Light Leak problem and the glass is now level and I'm not hitting the Bezel when I slide my finger across the screen or I can't feel the sharp edges of the plastic on the sides....sorry this is for another forum...

    Anyways, let me know if the SIM replacement works for you...other then that, I guess most are stuck until the next update.
