Just picked up a new MacBook Pro last night. Seems like a very nice machine (coming from a rev B, 1st gen MBP). An oddity, though. When closing the lid to put it in sleep mode it seems to awaken for a few seconds every 45 seconds. There will be an audible bzz-bzzzt (as if the hard drive spun briefly), then the apple logo light built into the lid illuminates for a few seconds. It then extinguishes and 45 seconds later the pattern repeats.

I'm not seeing anything in Energy Saver settings to tweak for this. Any ideas?

Do you have the "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" checked off. If so deselect it.

Also do you have any usb devices (other then a keyboard/mouse) hooked up. disconnect everything and see if the problem occurs again.

I had a scanner that would prevent my computer from going into sleep mode so perhaps a peripheral could be causing it as well

    Hi Jeffery,

I too have recently taken delivery of a new Macbook Pro. When I finished work today I closed the lid expecting the Mac to go to sleep, and indeed it did 'appear' to go to sleep, the apple logo went out etc. However when I retrieved the laptop from my bag approx 3 hours later it was extremely hot and the battery had drained from 100% to 16%. A friend of mine also has the new Macbook Pro, and the same thing is happening to his machine. Is this symptomatic of a wider problem I wonder!

I have the same problem. I just bought it last week, and the insomnia began today. It's exactly as described in the first post.

I too have this same issue, happened once I was quite with puzzled with why my laptop was burning hot when I got home. The second time I realized something was wrong. So now I put it to sleep myself, which I was used to doing with my original mac book pro (very early, very buggy).

I was hoping for better this time around.

It appears that I fixed the problem. I changed the following settings back to the defaults, then opened and closed the lid several times, giving the computer time to settle down each time.

In the System Preferences, search on "ether," "wake," and "sleep" and set the appropriate ones back to the defaults.

    1. Yes, allow Bluetooth to awaken the computer

    2. Yes, allow the system to put the disks to sleep whenever possible

    3. Yes, allow administrators to wake the computer over ethernet.

That seems to have fixed it, but those settings shouldn't have mattered. Apple still has a little work to do on this. This is more of a workaround, and not thoroughly tested.

Note that I have previously posted on this - but I tried everything to fix the sleep/wake issues including the list above -- it did not resolve my problem.

Add in the trackpad which does not work properly, and back it went.

The guys at the Genius Bar didn't even blink when I described my problem, and refunded my money including refunding of the restocking fee. I overheard one of the guys say to the other workers "this is the 4th Pro we're getting back today for the same problems".

Seems there is some sample variation since some people aren't experiencing any problems at all. Either way, I was pleased with my refund, and I'll stick with my Early 2008 MBP until they iron out their problems with the sleep/wake and power management, as well as the trackpad.

Man, I have the same problem. MBP goes to sleep (I saw the light blink slowly before I put it in my bag) but when I get home it's red hot and the battery is almost dead.

Today I put it to sleep by closing the lid and it sleeps for say 10 secs but wakes up (Apple logo lights up, optical drive resets) then sleeps again, wakes... endless cycling. I had to shut it down.

Apple, here I come... I had hoped the new MBP would have cured these silly sleep issues.

I dun have the same problem as you but if i shut the case and let it go to sleep and then open it suddenly, the screen and computer won't come out of sleep mode =[

I just noticed I was having the same problems. Like the post above, my machine is more or less pristine. I haven't really changed anything that should affect this. I don't have any peripherals attached, just the power cable and I'm on wireless.

I didn't notice this until last night, because I always just close and go to bed. But last night I noticed that the light wasn't pulsating like my previous MBP and the Apple logo on the lid kept coming on every 45-60sec and then would turn off a few seconds later.

I too had this problem yesterday, I had closed my laptop thinking it was asleep and put it in my bag. When i got home it was BURNING HOT. I took it to the apple store immediately and they swapped it out, i rebooted and it seem to fix the issue for now, but i was worried i damaged something by letting it get that hot originally, so since it was only a couple days old I swapped it out! Im shutting down for now until they fix the problem.

I to have had a similar issue. I closed the lid of my MBP (Late 2008) only to open it 10 minutes later to a black screen. I eventually had to do a hard restart.

So, would it be right to assume that this is a bug which wouldn't be solved by an OS reinstall?

Normally, this is what i would do but since others are also having the problem.

Let me ask also, did you guys experiencing the problem import settings from your previous system that could be affecting this? or did any of you start on a totally clean slate and encounter this?

I'm not having any problem resuming from sleep, just that it wont stay asleep. Also, to answer your question, this is a fresh install. No migration at all.

Ya, I don't know perhaps they are related? My computer sort of gets stuck half way. I mean the display goes off, and it appears to be sleeping but the light never does it usual snore.

I have done all PRAM resets and whatnot and have deleted the enrgy preference file. Maybe it'll help?
