Q: vertical lines - there for sure

I want to share my success of getting iMac, that was demoed for a while, before I became user and warranty time started ticking for me. Initially unhappy to discover, that unit was on display at some computer shop (via traces of activities), I am now extremely happy to be found in position to be covered by 12 months warranty, once famous vertical lines issue is there, as it should (same unfortunate serial number). Only weeks were left for this joy to happen.

On the other hand, I am posting this to encourage Apple looking at the essence of problem, and stop playing unaware - when the rest of the world knows issue very well, it would be surprising, that otherwise great company would behave like it does now. If we, Apple users, are goodwilled to slightly overpay for our gadgets, surely we do this with trust in Apple as decent manufacturer of reliable equipment. If manufacturing turns out to have defects (having that for particular serie is sure sign), we, users, and Apple are finding ourselves at crossroads: either our favorite company does right thing to protect our expectations, or we no longer expect equipment to be reliable, we though it should be.

If my PC screens are more robust, than those in Mac, and if there is nobody to stand on our side in such discoveries - well, you got idea.

Personally, I am happy to have warranty, as described. But it is only luck. One cannot expect be lucky all the time.

Apple, please address issue as needed, I want to be able buying your next product.

iMac Core Duo, Mac OS X (10.5.3)

That is factory fault. You can ask your local Apple store to fix it if you still have the warranty, if not, there is no repair program, you need to pay the labour and parts. But in fact, you may replace the LCD panel by your own and which is cheaper than the Apple store so much.

Not a good idea, because it seems that it is NOT the LCD fault *but some other aging component that creates the lines in the first place*, and this seems to be confirmed by a great majority of Apple extended care users who have their LCDs replaced by a completely new one from a dif. batch, only to find the appearance of the first line at such a short time as only one week of usage.

W860-XXXX-U2N iMac Intel. Two vertical lines. And this was a replacement Mac for a G5 iMac that had a different display issue!

    Apple should recall these things!

My iMac has the serial W860**U2R - Jan 06. I have 5 lines on the right hand of the screen, the 5th appeared yesterday.

I called apple to record this fault last night & was expecting to be told that it would cost the £300+ others have been quoted for the repair, but to my utter joy Apple are covering the full cost of having my iMac LCD screen replaced! I didn't mention anything about these forums, it being a common fault, Sales of Goods Act, or anything of this such, I just said I was just looking for some advice as my lcd had 'developed a fault'.

I was taken through some diagnostics with an advisor, he then transferred me to tech support, & this lovely Irish guy called Barry said although my mac was outside warranty he was willing to make an exception!

I've been referred to my nearest authorised dealer in Glasgow, I called them today & they confirmed it has been noted the repair will be covered by Apple. I am aware of lot have people have made the point it might be replaced with an lcd which could have the same fault, but I am more than happy as this is at least a step in the right direction. I'm not sure if this was just good timing, but as previously mentioned those of you who have been told you would need to pay for the repair may want to give it another go now.

Congratulations Mr vboni, good for you, but take into consideration that you are among the huge 0.001% of the lucky users who are lucky to live somewhere the dealers or the local Apple reps. are decent enough to take things into their own hands, but for the rest of us, who are not lucky enough lo live in such type of countries, we have to put up with Apple´s lack of responsibility and caring towards their customers.

I agree, Diazruanova, that it's not the LCD itself but some other component that makes the lines happen. I just got back my early 2006 iMac 17" core duo W860...U2N with it's second screen replacement in 10 days. Will let you know when the line(s) appear again, as I assume they will. Apple keeps running their "hardware check" and everything seems to be OK there. So - contacts? rubbing wires? excess heat? mischievous elves?

    Thank you vboni
After reading your post I decided to give it another try. Nothing to lose eh? I called and e-mailed and registered my problem (which is all of yours as well) and got nowhere last year after my warranty expired. I gave Apple a call last week and....they gave me a custom warranty and said bring it in to an authorized dealer. I did and the dealer said the screen would be fixed under warranty free. YAY! Thanks again.

    Apple has regained my respect

    Wow, that looks awful!!!
I am not sure your problem is related to the one that are having thousands of users, ours is the slow appearance of VERTICAL lines (thus the title of this thread), you know, first one, later two, etc until you have hundreds of them making your computer experience miserable.
You can try attaching an external monitor just to discard some other component besides the LCD

Got it back! No charge! They replaced the LCD and hopefully the lines do not return. I forgot how nice that machine was. Good luck all.

That's not the same problem that I have.

I would take it in to Apple to have it fixed.

Yes, I believe it is about that time. I still think it is still very important for users to let apple know as soon as these things happen, because wether it is cost of providing people to answer all the additional calls, the unsatisfied customers from holding times, unsatisfied people with the ISSUES!, it will help get the issue addressed. But they would have you isolate the issue down to the last possible thing most times to be sure the correct problem has been verified and will be fixed. (even if it is redundant)
