Nov 9, 2008 12:47 PM in response to jsneddonby Zevoneer,It's unlikely that there'll be any software updates at this stage to make the 5th Generation compatible with rentals. When new iPods are released they always have options that are not made available on earlier versions. If they'd wanted to (or if it was possible) then it would have happened when rentals first came along. -
Nov 12, 2008 2:05 PM in response to jsneddonby PT,5th generation iPods can play PURCHASED movies just fine, so there is always that option.
Keep in mind that the iTunes movie rental service came out AFTER the 5th generation iPod were discontinued.

Nov 12, 2008 2:26 PM in response to jsneddonby Chris CA,Appl retails stores will give you 10% for your old iPod when you purcahse a new iPod.
This is to encourage recycling.
However, you would likely get more than the 10% by reselling it on eBay and such.
