I noticed that the top of my iMac gets hot to the touch. Is this normal? Is there suppose to be a fan to help cool it off. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks...

Yes that is pretty normal many people like to use iStat Pro to monitor their temps, fan speeds, disk etc and smcFanControl for adjusting fan speeds. I have mine set to show in degrees Fahrenheit it currently is showing:

    HD:124
    CPUA: 112
    Airport Card: 140i
    Ambient: 88
    GPU: 126
    GPU Diode: 133
    GPU Heatsink: 126
    HD Bay 1: 124

All these are in a normal range however it is a very warm day and that greatly impacts temps.

In short I wouldn't be too concerned, the iMac is packaged in very tight space and has several cooling fans. If you have pets or live in a very dusty environment make sure you keep the openings on the back of the machine clean, that will only help matters.

I too have noticed the same problem. Except for one difference. My new iMac now looks like rays of sunshine on the left corner of the screen. This is just not acceptable. I called Apple and they will come pick up my computer in a few days.

Here is what it looks like.

    Those are not reflections either.

I really wish I knew what would make it get THAT hot.

Using suction cups carefully pull the class cover off. Then clean the inside of the glass. Problem probably solved.

I am sorry however, this was not a very helpful answer. This does not fix the problem.

I also have this banding or rays of sunshine on my iMac. I also have uneven display quality, with the middle third of the screen appearing darker than the rest. It basically looks dirty, especially when I have a pure white desktop. I sent this off to apple for repair - they said it was a dirty glass panel and they had cleaned it - but it has been returned exactly the same as i sent it off. I'd keep complaining to apple as, for the moment, they do not see this as a product defect and have no method of repair.

I guess I will have to wait and see the outcome. They will come pick up my iMac on Friday. I really hope they will not do this method of action with me. I will most certainly, complain again.
That to me is just not an acceptable method. My iMac from last year(model just before the alum. one)
sure does not have this problem of overheating. Maybe things a bit more squeezed together in the alum ver. . IDK. I just know this needs to be fixed.

NOPE. All they did was replace the glass. Or so they say. I guess I will just have to wait for it to happen again and then send it to them again.

i would contact applecare straight away and tell them you are unhappy with the repair, as i did, and then they might offer to fit a new lcd panel. and if thats no good, complain again! keep complaining until its fixed, thats what im doing

Yeah, I imagine that is what I will need to do. It still gets super hot.
