I was getting the ads in October and found some applescan software, I can't remember where and it deleted some malware and the ads stopped.
About a week ago they started popping back up. I could not find the site where I downloaded the applescan software. I did find some applescan software on apple.com but it said there was no malware, trojan horse, etc. on my computer.
I bought pithelmet and it blocked all pop up ads. That was great but safari started crashing a lot then. I saw a forum on here that said pithelmet could cause that.
So I downloaded a trail copy of ProtectMac Anti Virus software from Apple's website.
When I ran it the first time it took a couple of hours but it found and I deleted several files, I assume they were viruses, malware, trojan horses, etc.
Anyhow, after that I turned off pithelmet.
I now get regular ad pop-ups but no Vimax Ads.
Safari is still crashing some but not as much as when I had pithhelmet turned on.
There is a forum on here that says to stop pithelmet related crashes you have to uninstall it.
I was looking for that when I saw this.
Hope this helps.

Welcome to Apple discussions.
I just accesses the International BBC site and wandered around it for awhile. I did not see the ads you referenced...... I do have Safari's pop-up blocker enabled.
As an aside, Pithhelmet (and many many other Safari enhancers/haxies) are documented bad news and cause crashes.iMac 20" 2.4 Ghz Intel-based/2 GB, iMac 17" 1.8 Ghz G5/1 GB, DSL, Firewire HDs, Mac OS X (10.5.5)
