Q: vertical lines - there for sure

I want to share my success of getting iMac, that was demoed for a while, before I became user and warranty time started ticking for me. Initially unhappy to discover, that unit was on display at some computer shop (via traces of activities), I am now extremely happy to be found in position to be covered by 12 months warranty, once famous vertical lines issue is there, as it should (same unfortunate serial number). Only weeks were left for this joy to happen.

On the other hand, I am posting this to encourage Apple looking at the essence of problem, and stop playing unaware - when the rest of the world knows issue very well, it would be surprising, that otherwise great company would behave like it does now. If we, Apple users, are goodwilled to slightly overpay for our gadgets, surely we do this with trust in Apple as decent manufacturer of reliable equipment. If manufacturing turns out to have defects (having that for particular serie is sure sign), we, users, and Apple are finding ourselves at crossroads: either our favorite company does right thing to protect our expectations, or we no longer expect equipment to be reliable, we though it should be.

If my PC screens are more robust, than those in Mac, and if there is nobody to stand on our side in such discoveries - well, you got idea.

Personally, I am happy to have warranty, as described. But it is only luck. One cannot expect be lucky all the time.

Apple, please address issue as needed, I want to be able buying your next product.

Seriously, what would warrant a repair extension program? This problem extends GLOBALLY..

My friends company has over 10 imacs with this problem.

    iMac Intel Core 2 Duo 17'' (iSight). Late 2006. Serial W860 . . .

Lines started appearing three months out of warranty. I've stopped counting but have well over 30 lines now. Guess I'll give support a call soon and hope for the best. You would think with so many of us having this problem Apple would step up . . .

17" iMac 1.9GHz PowerPC G5, serial starting with W855. Purchased end of December 2005. The vertical lines started showing up a couple months ago. Right now there are 12 bright lines that are always visible, along with 7 dimmer lines.

Just wanted to add to the reply count on this topic to help the cause (wake up, Apple). Yes, I also signed the petition. After reading this thread I'll be calling Apple Care tomorrow. Thanks to all who have contributed their experiences.

Ok, it seem that there exist some kind of unofficial (internal) warranty extension for W860**U2N iMac's.

After I read some promising post at http://imaclines.blogspot.com/ I contact Apple support from Swiss. And YES, I can confirm, they will repair now my iMac!

IMPORTANT NOTE, be OBSTINATELY when you call Apple! I phoned up to 50min!

At first, they said simply that's out of warranty. Then, after a first waiting time, they mean there was some special warranty extension, but it's also expired. I also do not accept that subterfuge. So, after a second longer waiting time at the phone, they said, that they make a "special exclusion" for me.

Whatever regular or not, my iMac is now under warranty in repair...

It would be nice if someone can help to contain the effective root of the problem. There are several parts that are called in that context.

    - Display
    - logic board
    - video board
    - internal power or display cables
    - an obscure hardware related issue in/with the video RAM

    Hi lenn
The line appeared 6 days after the first fix. They replaced the LCD, LVDS & they cleaned all cable contacts as per my request. Just got it back today after repair number 2. Hope this one takes or it's back it goes...for free of course since the LCD has a 90 day warranty.

I think they usually have 3 goes at repairing things and then after that just give up, scrap the machine and replace it.

Same issue, five lines on my screen so far. About one new line per week. Took it to the apple store and they just said out of warranty too bad. 2006 serial W87.....VUX. This is my first apple and probably my last. I'll try apple care again, but my old dell PC that is probably six years old still is working great. Don't like windows, but if apple can't get the hardware down what are my options... I thought apple would be better, not worse...

Have you tried calling Apple and asking to speak to a supervisor? Supervisors are the only ones who can authorize this repair for out of warranty repairs. Give it a shot. It worked for me and many others.

I just want to reiterate my experience with Apple. I got nowhere on the phone, as many of you have. So I took advice from Trading Standards, a government funded organisation here in the UK. They interpreted the law, based upon my problem and gave me concise instructions as to how to proceed. These I followed, writing a letter to Apple, to get the result I was happy with. Apple replied to my letter within 7 days. The repair was a screen replacement which was in the shop for 3 days.
I will say it was a relief to get it fixed, I didn't mind paying the bench time, I thought that a reasonable compromise since the warranty had expired. There is a reasonable expectation that the product should last and this is what you are asking for.

I got my first vertical line today. : ( I was cleaning my MacBook's screen, then when I turned it on, I saw a purple vertical line to the left of the screen. I'll be sending it for repair when I fly to San Francisco, the city where I bought my MacBook.

Hi, there! If that happened while depressing panel's surface, you can try to "massage" gently area of that line, with some soft cloth maybe - it is quite likely, that you could recover that stuck cause. I was told this trick while discussing subject issue with technicians.

Very good advises stated here: certainly, getting confirmation of a problem from a place with high concentration of similar machines would do, if put on the right table.
Apple might be clunky sorting out issue or getting firmly aware of it, but as we see reported, recognition of it spreads rather decently, hopefully turning into part of repair extension program.

Diaz, it is understandible how bad you feel, while luck still was not yet visiting you amongst others. To see Mac with defect is very sad, indeed. But it is in your own interest to patiently work along politely, enlightening your dealers/repairmen, maybe climbing supervision ladders (ask for upper contact, that could have impact on people you dealt with so far). Or you can just wait passively for hopeful resolution, if really tired. If there would happen repair extension, it would work wherever you are. Meanwhile, you could please yourself with something like Aspire One for Christmas - quite some toy, and they get unbelievable pricing these days here.

I have the very same problem for about 1,5 months. It began with 1 line and now there are 20 vertical lines with different colors. My serial number starts with W8603. I called the support center in my country and a tech guy told me that since the warranty expired, they could only fix the problem if I covered the cost myself, which was €400. Then I sent an email to support center but got no reply. I'm really disappointed by Apple's approach to this issue. This was my first Mac computer and I used a lot of windows based computers/laptops before this and I had no serious problem with any of them. Apparently this is a production default and I'd expected more from Apple with regard to quality control and customer satisfaction. I wonder if it is only about producing shiny, good-looking products with higher prices and make handsome profits for Apple or Apple really feels the responsibility to deliver products with quality assurance which justify the high prices. I'm considering buying new Apple products (laptop/cinema display) but this issue and Apple's indifference to the subject as voiced by many here seriously bugs me. I will do everything I can to make Apple acknowledge this problem. I'm sure that there many people out there who just pays this huge cost without knowing that this is a common problem. I hope that Apple shows that it pays more credit to "quality" than "make-up". Simple I'm very very disappointed.

    Nevin
