yes, same problem: mbp screen wont turn on, but computer and sounds do. external monitor not working either. I am very sad because the mbp was a gift, and I do not have the $ to replace the board. I joined the discussion only for this issue. I have tried everything mentioned, but I cant do much because I don't have another computer (im at school). I will be checking back hoping apple addresses the situation.

My suggestion: go to the apple store and ask for a free replacement, it should be covered by the two year extended warranty. If the (un)genious does not want to include it in the free repair program, call to the customer service and try to obtain a free reparation. Additionally, I would write officially to apple trying to find out any statistics or proof that the logic board used in the repair is not prone to fail , as the one that it is substituted (the warranty, even extended, will be over sooner or later). I would explain you what I did, but unfortunatelly apple won´t consider it technically enough as to allow the post to be included in this forum, so you will have to google for ¨macrumors nvidia screwed¨ and in the first entry, look for the post number 1006. In that "non technical" forum maybe you can find some useful information.

It was worthless to solve the problem (I will have to go to the closest authorized center this afternoon, driving 60 miles, to repair the computer after 2.5 weeks), but at least you get some relief...

Just to add to the massive and continuing list of problems - my macbook pro is back in Manchester Apple store being fixed for the second time around - logic board replacement sorted it last time lets see how long this "new one" lasts and it was 25 days over its year warranty - but they are fixing it for free?!

FYI: Apple officially acknowledged the problem with faulty NVIDIA GPUs and is providing FREE replacement of all units if they are newer than 2 years! EVEN IF OUT OF WARRANTY!!!

    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377

So run all to the Apple Stores before they run out of units =)

    Sven

P.S.: Today I had the same problem and I will drop my MBP off tomorrow ASAP so it'll be fixed!

    csven,

    WRONG.

they will replace the GPU, not the whole computer and they will only replace it *if you are experiencing the nvidia defect*.

your warranty will be extended to two years should you have this problem and only if you have a defective chip.

GREAT !!!! Just replaced in ITALY, for free. I write in Italian, so the italian guys can better Understand.

Ottimo.

I think its supposed to be the latest rev. I got my MBP fixed about a month ago, took about 3 weeks for me because the parts were out of stock and had to be shipped to the Apple Store.

So far, no problems... yet. I was able to use my MBP for just over a year before the GPU crapped out on me. We'll see how long this board will last, I guess we'll find out in about a year's time.

Haven't done a whole lot of benchmarks, but it doesn't seem to run much cooler than the previous version. Been using SMC fancontrol to manually ramp up the fan...

But overall, I have to commend Apple for stepping up and take care of this issue, better late than never.

By the way, check out the Simpson's parody of Mapple... do it on your PC if your MBP isn't working.

The noise from my right fan is not a buzz, but really loud. Quiet music running on iTunes must be set at FULL volume, to nearly equal the noise level coming from my fan.

I had this problem a few months ago but it went away after a few days... now it's back again. It stopped once in the past hour for 1-2 mins, but then resumed.

    Fan speed is around 2000.

hey guys, I also have this problem, few days ago suddenly my screen went blank (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377)

I'm from Europe, bought my MBP last September in NYC, and am traveling again there on 16th Dec. the problem is, I'm staying just 9 days. will they be able to exchange my GPU in those days, what's your experience with that? should I make an appointment at 5th ave store or is it OK if I just walk in. are they replacing only the GPU or entire board? I have my data locked down. do they need to enter the system for that repair? Because I don't want my data to be accessed by other people. do they do the repair in store or are they sending them somewhere else?

    thanks for sharing your experience

    Hey,

I'm having the reverse problem, I bought my computer in Europe, but I'm living in the States now Fortunately, the Apple Care protection is international.

I just left my MBP at the 5th avenue Apple Store today, and they said it looked like a software issue, but it might be the logic board, as you can read in other posts. It's going to take 7-10 business days, though. I don't know if they will be able to fix it before you leave. You should definitely make an appointment online before you show up, and back up your data using the target mode.

Maybe taking it to an Apple repair center in Europe is the way to go.

Has anyone else been denied this fix because of Apples 'Test' at the Apple store? What sounded like them doing an actual diagnostic test turned out to be a Genius just taking my mac to the back, checking the serial number against an internal list that Apple has.

The genius came out and told me 'Yes, your video card is defective but it failed the test'. I asked if I could see the results of the test, to which he let me know that 'it wasn't in the group of serial numbers of affected machines'.

I had to argue my case that my MBP was doing EXACTLY as the KB article mentioned and that the KB article said it would be fixed regardless. He said there was nothing he could do and the fix would be $1250. I got a little irritated at this point since it seemed a little unfair that my PC was somehow denied even though it exhibited the problems. Finally the genius told me that 'OK, since it is showing the EXACT symptoms of the Nvidia issue that Apple would repair it. I dropped it off yesterday and got it back today, fixed.

I'm happy that I got it fixed - but I am TRULY blown away that Apple is denying specific Macs based on serial number EVEN THOUGH they contain the 8600 chip which will fail, no matter what, as ALL chips were defective.

    Just a word of caution.

Well, kinda. The guy at the Genius Bar warned me it would cost me a lot if I fried the graphics card by installing third-party drivers from nvinstaller.com. I told him the problem appeared before that, and it was a temporary fix that worked once, but I am still waiting for his call to be sure I'm not going to pay to repair my screen...

He did not take it back to look at a serial number list, though.

Just got my Macbook Pro back from fixing, and they did fix it for free. All I did was show them the KB article and they said it was legitimate.

Although I do still have the same video card, and I'm wondering why they would do this? If they know it's defective, why replace it with the same one? Anyway, at least my beloved computer is back and working...who knows how long it will continue to work, though.

My July 2007 mbp screen died in late July 2008. I sent it in for repair. They replaced much of the inside. Unfortunately, 4 months later the screen has died again.
