Q: vertical lines - there for sure

I want to share my success of getting iMac, that was demoed for a while, before I became user and warranty time started ticking for me. Initially unhappy to discover, that unit was on display at some computer shop (via traces of activities), I am now extremely happy to be found in position to be covered by 12 months warranty, once famous vertical lines issue is there, as it should (same unfortunate serial number). Only weeks were left for this joy to happen.

On the other hand, I am posting this to encourage Apple looking at the essence of problem, and stop playing unaware - when the rest of the world knows issue very well, it would be surprising, that otherwise great company would behave like it does now. If we, Apple users, are goodwilled to slightly overpay for our gadgets, surely we do this with trust in Apple as decent manufacturer of reliable equipment. If manufacturing turns out to have defects (having that for particular serie is sure sign), we, users, and Apple are finding ourselves at crossroads: either our favorite company does right thing to protect our expectations, or we no longer expect equipment to be reliable, we though it should be.

If my PC screens are more robust, than those in Mac, and if there is nobody to stand on our side in such discoveries - well, you got idea.

Personally, I am happy to have warranty, as described. But it is only luck. One cannot expect be lucky all the time.

Apple, please address issue as needed, I want to be able buying your next product.

    Hi edis,

I am not sure why some of you guys do not get it:
It is not a matter of individual solution, but a matter of a definitive solution for everybody in the whole world. I really do not care anymore about my problem because first of all, I am working basically on my windows PC and secondly, for my music composition work who needs necessarily the mac, I attached a new 20" monitor (much, much cheaper than taking it to the Apple repair center) and voila, no more vertical lines for me, BUT what about the other almost three thousand or more affected users all over the world who are not lucky, patient, or simply do not have the time or skills to speak on the phone for hours?

How many here on this thread, have succeeded on getting a repair for free??? no more than ten at the most!!! so it is obvious that this is not a solution for everybody which should necessarily be a recall from Apple and I repeat: ALL OVER THE WORLD.

Now, if you think only for yourself and a few others, or you think that the rest of the two or three thousand or so people that are NOT able to "convince" their local Apple technicians, reps or whatever, to fix for free their machines, are inept or do not know how to speak or are impatient or rude or... I am sorry, but you are wrong.
The solution should be for everyone and I have been working on it for almost a year, of course, outside this forum whose moderators keep on a very short leash.

Does this have anything to do with the new imacs. I am close to buying a new imac and am just looking for reviews/feedback on the 20 inch imacs.

I am a teacher and have had 20 iMacs for 2 years. After 6 months, the first computer started getting vertical lines. It was repaired. A couple months later, another computer with vertical lines and one with a power supply issue. This has continued now for 1 1/2 years now. I have had one screen changed twice, and at least 9 other machines repaired at least once. The apple care is now void and cannot be extended. I'm sure Apple knows about this issue. It really bothers me that they haven't stepped up and corrected the problem. Each of these computers was over $1,200 not including the programs. 10 out of 20 machines with these types of issues is not very good odds for the consumer. I think it needs to be reported.

I'm from Brazil. Here, Apple Brazil say that they don't recognize this vertical line as a manufacturer problem. My iMac 17" Core 2 Duo has now two vertical lines and my guarantee finished 9 months before the first line appear. Now, I will have to pay more than US$650 to fix that. There are many macusers here in Brazil with the same problem and no solution for us except paying to have the computer fixed. If you're in the US, fortunately, you can reach the headquarter of Apple. The people like me, out of US, has no alternative except paying to fix the iMac. I'm a macuser since '86 and now I'm very disappointed with Apple staff. Nobody there wanted to know about the problem. The only thing that they said to me was "You can look for a technical support. You can compare the price in different places and choose the cheapest place to fix your iMac". In other words, "we don't mind to your problem". I bought my iMac in January 25, 2007.

No there are no screen issues with the new imacs (though the 24 inch imac screen is much much better quality than teh screen on teh 20 inch)

The only big issue with the new imacs is audio problems when using headphones or external speakers.

Hi, edis! Thanks for your suggestion. I tried but to no avail. I guess having it serviced is my only hope.

    Check out our problem:

It appeared yesterday out of nowhere. I'm taking my mac to the reseller this week and await his reaction. Considering we bought it more than two years ago, it will probably not be repaired for free.

If so, I will try to contact Apple directly.

After reading this discussion, I'm seriously considering a voluntary downgrade in design and userfriendliness in exchange for a better quality-for-money ratio.

    Once again;.............
I had got my imacLCD 17 inches display replaced at free of cost just 15 days back==totally out of warranty....
Now today i was shocked to see suddenly a big almost 5 inches width multicoloured patch on display......
It seems like the problem is not with the display ==but something else is causing it....Its so obvious that after seeing so many peoples imac getting same problem===its definitely a manufacturing defect.......

    Hey........... Apple rise rise....

Wow. Seems I've been forced to join a large, but wildly unpopular club.

I've got a 17" iMac bought back in '06, serial #862.... It had been just single vertical lines of pixels scattered randomly across my screen, but as of Friday (12/5) the right 2" of my screen went from rainbow to white and is now black. Yippee. I was wanting to upgrade to a larger screened iMac sometime next spring, but don't know if the current one will last that long. This stinks.

Yes it is relatively common for the repair not to lbe to sucessful - it must be difficult to fix I suppose.

Good luck with the next repair.

I, like thousands of others, have come across an iMac (iSight, 2GHz, 1GB, 150GB SATA) that developed vertical colored lines after 2 years of service. I have seen the threads for this issue and I have seen and signed the on-line petition for Apple to address this issue. Next I called Apple and arranged for them to fix it at no cost to me. Call Apple. Doesn't much matter what phone number you use, just call. Tell the person on the other end of the line that you are having a display issue with you Mac and they will route you to tech support.

When you get tech support, don't bother talking to the person. That person is in tier level 1 support and all they are there to do is see if you have made sure that your Mac is plugged in and your monitor (if it is separate) is turned on (I'm over simplifying, but I'm not far off base). Just ask to speak to someone in tier level 2 support. You must say those words: "Tier Level 2 Support".

Explain your issue with TL2 support and he/she will have you do 2 maybe 3 things.
    1. He/she may have you take a screen shot of you desktop. Why? To make sure that the problem is the display and not the mid-plane (if the problem is the display the lines will not be in the screen shot). Onto the next procedure.

    2. Shut down your computer and unplug all peripheral devices. Unplug the computer for 10 seconds. Plug the power cord in (nothing else) and start the computer. Once the computer has started he/she will have you plug in the keyboard/mouse. Be sure to tell them that the lines are still there (unless your one of the lucky ones and they go away) while its booting up. Onto the next procedure

    3. Power the iMac down. Then restart it while pressing Option+PR. When the iMac shuts down, release the keys and the iMac will start up again. When that does not work, he/she will put you on hold for a few minutes. When he/she comes back they should begin the process of giving you a CS number to take (along with your iMac) to your local Apple Authorized repair center to get your iMac repaired free of charge.

The gentleman that helped me was in Canada and my call was only the second that he had received about this iMac display issue.
