Q: Manual Migration from Tiger Questions

I've got a new MBP coming in a couple of days. My current iBook is running 10.4.11. I plan to make migration as simple as possible--i.e., I plan to not use Migration Assistant and basically install most apps anew so as not to run into so many of the migration issues people run into. But, there are a few things I need to move from my old computer: I'd like to copy my Safari folder from ~/Library/Safari, as well as ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari. Then, there's Mail: same idea there. And then for iTunes, I plan to simply replace the iTunes folder on the new computer with the one from my old one. I figure that when I start up iTunes, it will recognize the music in there? Or do I need to "import" all the music into the new iTunes? I plan to use the same login info on the new computer as on my current one so as not to run into permissions issues.

Given these actions, am I going to run into any problems moving these things from 10.4 to 10.5?

14" iBook, 933 MHz, Mac OS X (10.4.11), 640 MB, Airport Extreme card

Folders You Can Move to Your new Mac

From the Home folder copy the contents of Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites.

    In your /Home/Library/ folder:

/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)

Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)

    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Contextual Menu Items (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/PreferencePanes (copy the whole folder)

    If you want cookies:

    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
    /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist

    For Entourage users:

Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
    Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft

    For FireFox:

    /Home/Library/Applications Support/FireFox
    /Home/Library/Preferences/org.mozilla.firefox.plist

It will work if you don't miss anything. Some applications, such as Mail, have several things that must be moved, such as it preferences, folders in your library, and folders in Applications Support in your library. Is is safer to use Migration assistant, but don't let it move applications.

Hmm. thanks for the info. I'm not going to use Migration Assistant. I would much rather only manually copy the things I really need.

So, do I understand correctly that replacing Application Support and Home/Library folders from 10.4 to 10.5 will not result in problems with the 10.5 apps?

No, because your applications use the same data regardless of whether they are universal or PPC-only. However, you do not want to use PPC-only versions of applications if you can update them to universal versions because the latter will be faster than the former as well as being more compatible with Leopard.

You do not want to use PPC-only versions of such plug-ins as preference panes, contextual menu items, internet plug-ins, startupitems, etc. because they will not work on an Intel Mac.

As I'm going to a new Imac these are issues that concern me also. I could not use migration because it did not recognize my 10.4.11 which was set up as a RAID.
I reinstalled the OS on the Imac but got the same message. Any tips?
